In today’s world, manufacturing is a diverse sector and contributes enormously to the global economy. With new perspectives such as “Make in India”, manufacturing sector is expected to accelerate over the next few years.  However much of this growth will be challenged by willingness of foreign firms to outsource, increased labor content over mechanization, availability of skilled manpower, investment decisions in capacity, etc.  We will explore how these aspects need to be addressed to excel in manufacturing on the path to make in India.  The program will help the participants in understanding the complexity and challenges in manufacturing sector and would discuss the key decisions and the approach that a firm needs to adopt in such situations.

We will start by identifying the hierarchy of decision making in a firm, and the position of manufacturing strategy therein and its relationship with other functions.  We will then proceed to key parameters that are involved in the design of manufacturing systems, followed by in-depth analysis of manufacturing best practices (Toyota Production System).  The key challenge to `Make in India’ would be the ability to convince potential customers to transfer manufacturing to India: what are the arguments to be made?  How will these highly-mechanized systems be transferred to India?  What are the process technologies choices to be made?  And how should firms make the capacity decisions?  Should capacity and flexibility trade-off?  Finally, we will close on how to do benchmarking: the key tool to identify opportunities.

The program is designed for senior and middle level executives involved in manufacturing strategy decisions.  These are people who are responsible for either/both of matching market requirements or meeting the manufacturing needs of customers.

The program is designed to give the participant the necessary general management tools needed to evaluate a manufacturing strategy.  The program will help the participant recognize the key tenets of best practice manufacturing practices and the challenges of adopting the same.  Overall the participant will be able to appreciate the important role that manufacturing plays in the success of any firm.

The program engages participants through case-based discussions supplemented by lectures.  The cases will comprise of a mix of best-practice global cases, and cases that provide insights into how manufacturing can be transferred to India.  The participants will be required to spend time preparing the relevant case studies before the sessions, and hence residential participation is necessary
