Public policy needs to recognize and accommodate glocalization and regional strategic alliances, say experts at ‘Utthan 2018’, hosted by IIMB’s Public Policy and Management students

11 November, 2018, Bengaluru: The students of the one-year Post Graduate Programme in Public Policy and Management (PGPPM) and the Public Policy Club of the two-year Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) at IIM Bangalore hosted the very first edition of ‘Utthan’, a public policy summit, at IIMB on November 11 (Sunday), 2018.

The summit provided a platform to exchange views that spark conversations around contemporary policy topics.

Inaugurating the event in the presence of his peers, Professor Abhoy K Ojha, Dean of Academic Programmes, and faculty in the Organizational Behavior and Human Resources Management area at IIMB, said: “There is a need for us to go back to the roots of economics and revisit our public policies. We are now at an interesting point where we can expect a lot of changes as the policies are in a state of flux.”

The day-long event themed around the topic, ‘De-Globalisation – is the tide reversing?’ comprised a panel discussion, Samvaad, moderated by Maya Sharma, Executive Editor (South), NDTV. The panelists were Rahul Savdekar, Asia Government Industry Lead, Microsoft Corporation; Professor Rupa Chanda, RBI Chair Professor of Economics, IIM Bangalore; Vallabh Bhansali, Co-founder, ENAM Group; Prem Shankar Jha, economist, journalist and author, and Vivek Kulkarni, Founder Managing Director, Brickwork Ratings.

Elaborating on the theme, Prof. Chanda said, “De-globalisation is not reversal of globalisation but merely a correction. It is here to stay and we need realignment and new governmental architecture. Glocal is the future and the countries should open their borders and accept services from across regions.”

The panel concluded with a note that globalisation and de-globalisation have been co-existing for a long time now and they will continue to do the same in the future. Balance between the local and global markets is the key. Adding to the panel discussion, Professor G Raghuram, Director, IIMB, said: “India should strengthen its rural regions, post which they can decide to globalise or de-globalise at will.”

The event also included three major sub-events: a quiz competition, Quriosity; a case study competition, Samadhaan – the Solution, and a mock press competition where the participants dug deep into current policies and brainstormed towards possible solutions. The winners of each of these events received cash prizes. Samvaad and Samaadhan at Utthan 2018 saw participation of students from IIMB, IIMA, IIMC, ISB, TISS, Azim Premji University, Jindal School, among others.
