As the Open Network for Carbon Markets (ONCM) enters the pilot development stage, the project has reached an important milestone with the definition of the first phase of its pilot architecture. Before designing technology, the team invested significant effort in understanding decades of policy evolution, market practices, and institutional assumptions that shape today’s carbon markets.

A key discussion during the workshop at Networks for Humanity (NFH) focused on the treatment of carbon credits as digital assets and the architectural principles required to build an interoperable, open, and future-ready carbon market ecosystem. The deliberations examined how decisions around identity, governance, trust, and interoperability will influence future innovation while complementing existing carbon market institutions rather than replacing them.

The discussions benefited from valuable insights shared by Mr. Santosh K. Singh, Kavya Hari, Pramod Mishra, Prof. R. Srinivasan, Sujith Nair, Abhishek Sankritik, Prof. Anvita Pandey, Aliya Sheriff, Mythili Kamath, and Priyal Jain. Their collective perspectives helped refine the ONCM pilot architecture, reinforcing the belief that impactful digital public infrastructure is co-created through collaboration across the ecosystem.
