The Center for Digital Public Goods (CDPG) at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore convened a multi-stakeholder roundtable on 19th March 2026, in collaboration with Networks for Humanity (NFH), to co-design the Open Network for Carbon Markets (ONCM).. The discussion addressed structural inefficiencies in existing carbon markets, including fragmented registries, limited interoperability, pricing opacity, and the absence of standardised Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) frameworks. The Beckn-enabled, open network was proposed for carbon markets aimed at enabling interoperable, cross-border carbon credit transactions while preserving data sovereignty and transparency at scale.<\/p>

The ONCM design emphasises accessibility and inclusion, with a focus on enabling farmers and MSMEs to participate in global carbon markets through familiar digital interfaces, while ensuring traceability and programmable trust for buyers. Prof. R. Srinivasan highlighted the importance of expanding market access to grassroots participants, and Sujith Nair, Co-founder of Networks for Humanity (NFH), underscored the role of open protocol architectures in scaling such ecosystems. Project Lead Chaitrali Bhoi outlined prevailing market constraints and articulated the ONCM vision and approach.<\/p>

Participants included Praveena Rai, Dr. K. Ravichandran, Komal Shah, Dr. Ashish Rana, and Dr. Ch. Sudhakar Reddy, along with stakeholders from Tata Consultancy Services, PhonePe, Tata Motors, and other ecosystem institutions. The roundtable brought together a diverse set of participants from Networks for Humanity (formerly FIDE), Finternet (as part of NFH), Multi Commodity Exchange of<\/p>

India, Indian Institute of Forest Management, National Remote Sensing Centre, Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, National Law School of India University, and Indian Institute of Technology Madras, as well as organisations such as Reliance Industries Ltd., SML Ltd., Tata Trusts, RenewCred, iSPIRT, YUVA Unstoppable, Health Care Without Harm, ARTECH International & Beyond Bar Code, and Tata Motors.<\/p>

The session also included international participation, with teams from Tata Consultancy Services (Sweden office) and ARTECH International & Beyond Bar Code (Brussels) joining to contribute perspectives on cross-border carbon credit trading, the European Union\u2019s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), and emerging frameworks such as Digital Product Passports (DPP).
