Programme Overview

The participants will learn to critically understand and assess the future of financial services and fintech through the technology and digital disruptions. The program will analyze the actors who will drive future innovation and assess which technology will have faster and lasting impact on the financial sectors. The program will examine payments, crypto currency and blockchain and how they contribute to the new age transaction. The participants will get a deeper understanding of cyber security and risk management. This program will harness the data with AI and Machine Learning. The program will also assess how personal finance is transforming fintech.

Programme Content 

Module 1 (IIM Bangalore)

a. Technology, Digital Disruptions and Fintech: This is the inaugural module and it encompasses the recent digital disruptions in financial services sector. It builds onthe scope and opportunities for emerging markets with an introduction to Artificial Intelligence (AI)/Machine Learning (ML).Further, it includes introduction to some of the finest start-ups of India in this space.
b. Payments, Cryptocurrencies, Blockchain and ICO:Introduction to blockchain and how it can be used as a general-purpose technology. Evaluation of bitcoin as a specificapplication of blockchain and effective use of blockchain. This segment focuses on the role of changing financing opportunities and immediate access to liquidity through Initial Coin Offering (ICO) blockchain as a new crypto-economic financing model.
c. Data, ML and Fintech:This segment explores how the financial industry is affectedby AI and ML. The business world is getting transformed and changing rapidly with the digital disruption backed with insight and automation opportunities gained out of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ ML) enabling Data Analytics. With the invent of new entrants like Fintech, digital and payment banks, new regulations and change in customer behaviour traditional banking system is facing external disruptions and tension to reinvent itself. Business processes are critically examined not only on client accusations but to enhance customer experience as well. In this segment participants learn how to use data and machine learning (ML) better to adapt to this scenario.

d. Cybersecurity: The Cybersecurity Specialization covers the fundamental concepts underlying the construction of secure systems, from hardware to software to human-computer interface, with the use of cryptography to secure interactions. These concepts are illustrated with examples drawn from modern practice. Participants will develop a way of thinking that is securityoriented, and develop a better understanding of how to think about adversaries and how to build systems that defend against them.

Module 2 (Gabelli School of Business, NYC)

a.Risk Management and Big Data and Advanced ML: This module will comprise of the learnings from world’s top
faculty and industry practitioners on how the risk management is being reshaped for financial institutions with the advent of big data and AI/ML techniques. The participants will learn the use of big data in risk management and stress test for systemically important financial institutions. We will also cover advanced ML tools like deep learning and reinforcement learning.

b. Regtech and Suptech : The impact of fintech and use of big data and AI/ML techniques are increasingly becoming a very informative tool for the regulation and implementation of policies for the new as well as traditional financial services sector. In this module the participants will learn how fintech applications are being looked at by the supervisory authorities. Understanding RegTech and SupTech will help financial institutions’ ability to meet regulatory demands in a cost efficient manner and help to analyze large and complex datasets.

c.Immersion at the heart of the financial capital of the world (NYC):This segment will focus on learning and sharing experiences with the top finance professionals of the world. The module will involve site visits to the germination site and hotbed of the digital disruption activity in the heart of the world financial district at Wall Street, New York. We shall visit the leading financial institutions’ headquarters of the digital disruption and learn from the professionals incharge of leading the disruptive changes. This module will focus on the extent of financial disruptions in the field of risk management, retail consumer banking, robo-advising and systematic trading.

Module 3(IIM Bangalore)

Individual Projects: This is the concluding module wherein each participant will work on a digital disruption project relevant to his/her field guided by a faculty expert. A seminar and panel discussion with leading industry experts from the field will be an integral part of this module. The programme journey concludes with wrap-up and project presentations.

Dr. Pulak Ghosh is currently a faculty of Decision Sciences and Center of Public Policy of the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB). He is the IIMB Chair Professor of Excellence. Prof. Ghosh served as a Distinguished Fellow at Niti Ayoog (Govt of India’s highest policy making body), and consults the Govt. on various issues of Economics, Finance,
Agriculture, Data driven Policy, Big Data and AI. His main research and teaching interest are in Big Data, Machine Learning, AI, Fintech, household finance, Economics, and public policy. Pulak has published over 70 research articles in internationally reputed journals. Prof. Ghosh was the Advisory Group member of Big data at the United Nations (UN) Global Pulse, a big data initiative by UN. He is a member of the prestigious Karnataka Knowledge Commission and Chairman of the big data initiative. He serves in the advisory board of various organizations, and is a member of various national and international committees on big data, AI and fintech. He was the senior advisor of McKinsey for ML and fintech. He has been named as one of the top 5 data scientists in the world (of Indian origin) by Techradar in 2017.

Prof. Sudip Gupta

Fordham University

Prof Sudip Gupta is a faculty in the finance area of the Gabelli School of Business, Fordham University and the Director of the MS in Quantitative Finance program. Dr. Gupta’s current research interests are in the interface of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and fintech. He has also co-authored multiple articles on credit derivatives (CDS), IPO, debt market, and treasury auctions. He has presented his research at top-level academic meetings and institutions worldwide and has been a consultant for various international organizations. He has also served as a consulting expert for multiple antitrust and financial litigations. Dr. Gupta has taught at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business, ISB, New York University’s Stern School of Business, and the University of Maryland’s Smith School of Business, in the areas of corporate finance, econometrics, fintech, investments, and machine learning at both undergraduate and graduate levels. He has received awards for both research and teaching. He has a PhD in economics from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Programme Structure

Digital Disruptions in Financial Services is a certificate programme with 9 days of domestic component and 6 days of International Component spread over 6 months(3 Feb - 8 July 2020).

On successful completion of the programme, the participants are eligible to be admitted to IIM Bangalore Alumni Association.

Programme Charges:

The tuition fee covers all instruction during the three modules; required books and other pedagogical materials, including self-learning materials and other inter-modular support. Programme fee includes the boarding charges at Bangalore but does not include travel and living expenses for New York module.

Programme fee is INR 5,05,500 + GST @ 18% per participant which is payable in three instalments as
per the schedule indicated below:
