Project management is now generally considered a critical business skill. By some estimates over 60% of business is conducted in the form of projects. And yet, a lot of projects in both the public and private sectors are persistently late and over budget. Project management skills can no longer be relegated to a few so-called project managers in the organisation. They need to be disseminated more widely as many organisations move towards a project-oriented structure to emphasize greater accountability and efficiency in execution. Furthermore, we cannot confine ourselves to single projects; the ability to manage a program of several projects concurrently under tight budgetary and resource constraints is an essential skill. In recent years projects have acquired a much greater strategic dimension. It is not only necessary to execute projects successfully, but it is even more important to choose to do the right projects in the first place. After all, the right portfolio of projects constitutes the firm’s business strategy. This four day course discusses all of the above aspects of project management.

The principal objectives of the P3M course are as follows:

• Understand the essential ingredients of project success – roles, responsibilities, organization, team work, and processes.

• Gain proficiency in the tools and techniques of project management – planning, controlling, and implementation.

• Appreciate the additional constraints imposed by program management.

• Understand the strategic nature of enterprise project management – projection evaluation, selection, portfolio criteria.

• Develop software expertise for the management of projects.

The course contents are grouped into the following categories:

• Project fundamentals: The topics covered include Risk Management, Commercials, Team Performance, and Stakeholder Communications.

• Tools: These comprise the “science” of project management – WBS and estimation, Realistic scheduling and resources, Budget and cash flow, Monitoring progress and the Earned Value Method.

• Some Extensions: Project dynamics, Common project problems, “Agile” project management.

• Enterprise Project Management: program management, Real time options, Portfolio selection and management.

• MS Project: Software fundamentals through the use of MS Project.

The course emphasizes the strategic, organizational and management aspects of projects. As such the technical (including computational) detail is minimal, and included for completeness purposes. We therefore recommend the course for middle and senior managers (including project managers) in all industries (public and private) that deal with projects. So widespread is the use of projects that we believe project management skills are likely to acquire greater prominence in virtually all industries.

The course is mainly delivered through case discussion and lectures. However, readings, presentations and laptop computer exercises also form an important part. Attendees who are considering taking (or have already taken) the PMP qualification of Project Management Institute will find the course very useful.

Professor Anshuman Tripathy is a faculty member in Operations Management. His research interests are two fold. His early research, which continues today, dwells into how firms design their globally distributed product development organizations with particular focus on firms that are involved in the design and development of complex engineered systems. Of late he has also been looking into how firms need to act along the industry value chain to ensure sustainability of their product/process innovations. His research has been published in IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management and Production and Operations Management. His paper `Structuring Work Distribution for Global Product Development Organizations’ was awarded the Wickham Skinner Best Paper (Runner- Up) for the best paper in Production and Operations Management.

At IIM Bangalore, Anshuman teaches the core course in Operations Management for the PGP programme, and offers an elective on Technology & Operations Strategy for all the long duration programmes. He also offers Executive Programmes on Project/ Programme Management, Value Chain Strategies, Manufacturing Excellence, Managing Technological Innovation, and Supply Chain Strategies. As a recognition of his teaching, Anshuman has been a regular invitee to “The Last Lecture” (initiated in 2017 by the PGP students to felicitate their best faculty over the 2-year MBA program).

Anshuman has been a faculty member at IIM Bangalore since 2011. Prior to that he was a faculty member at IIM Ahmedabad. Anshuman worked for more than 10 years, between his PGDM and PhD, in the automotive industry at Maruti Udyog Ltd and Ford India/USA, holding senior management positions in Purchasing, eBusiness Strategy Development, PD Programme Management, and Product Development. His last assignment, before pursuing a career in academics, was as General Manager (Product Engineering) at Ford India Ltd.

Professor Sudhir Chadha is a graduate of IIT Kanpur, andobtained his doctorate in theoretical physics at the University of Oxford where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He then pursued research in theoretical particle physics first at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen (as a Royal Society European Fellow), then at Centre d’Etudes de Nucleaire a Saclay in Paris, CERN (European Organisation for Nuclear research) in Geneva, and the University of Oxford. He has published over 25 papers in international journals. His main research interests were (are) in fundamental physics, unified theories, and the structure of the Higgs boson. He is also the author (with H. B. Nielsen) of the so-called Nielsen-Chadha theorem on symmetry breaking in nonrelativistic systems. Following his academic career in physics, Sudhir joined IBM UK, and became a consulting Partner in the IBM Global Business Services Division specializing in supply chain management, innovation, and project management. He executed major projects in the manufacturing industry with many clients including Rolls-Royce Aeroengines, Caterpillar, Honda Motors, and Rover Automobiles. About ten years ago Sudhir returned to academia (again!) to teach supply chain and project management at the University of Warwick UK as well as part-time at the IIMB (as an adjunct faculty).

I highly recommend it to anyone interested in furthering their field in Project, Program and Portfolio management. The courses at IIM B show how you can cross global barriers with a little bit of effort and how productive and useful it is for the professionals irrespective of the field.

The reference material provided was excellent. The best parts were the hands-on projects and the structure of the course in terms of case studies that helped me to map my learnings from the theory sessions and apply them on case studies and also helped in resolving problem abilities. The project-based case studies and instructive videos that were part of the course helped me to maintain a strong pace through the classes, and the interest grew with each session. I loved the flow of the content, and it was easy to focus on the topics with the help of course materials. The meticulous execution of each session is commendable.

I opted for guided training and was pleasantly surprised that I learned so much more than expected in those classes within short span of 4 days. The instructors were thorough and really explained the subject in-depth. It was very exciting for me to attend the interactive classes from the renowned scholars from MIT and IBM. Thank you.

Participating @ Project, Program & Portfolio Management program at IIM, Bangalore was truly a unique experience. After having decade of Project & Program management experience, P3M program has changed my perspective to look at Projects & Programs. At Reliance, now we are recognising the outcome of P3M, when we are delivering the IT programs with never before performance on each parameter.  Exceptional blending of Concepts, Real life questions & Case studies especially on project management strategies make P3M simply incredible and learning them from a MIT Scholar & a Rhodes Scholar makes the difference. What more can be said, first time in India, I received an international scholarship to pursue this specific program from none other than Project Management Institute, USA.

The 4-day residential executive education program is a very well structured intensive course which provided me a comprehensive and thorough knowledge on Project, Program and Portfolio management. The cases studies in the material provided were very challenging. Class-room audio-visuals were good. Faculty and participants’ interaction and debates helped me gain insights into problem solving methodologies within various manufacturing and service sectors. Moreover, the staff at IIMB campus including the dining hall staff were very pleasing and helpful. The after classes hours were best used to interact between participants and helped build team spirit and share ideas and thoughts. My sincere thanks to Prof. Anshuman Tripathy & Prof. Sudhir Chadha for their excellent lectures and real time scenarios. I also thank all my fellow participants for their team spirt and support. I strongly recommend this course to executives who are into project, program and portfolio management which will help to enhance their skills.

Firstly, Attending P3M course at IIMB is one of the best decisions I've ever made. It exceeded my expectations, “Simply an outstanding and stimulating program”, the learning we experienced during the four intense days of P3M (Project Program and Portfolio Management) at IIM Bengaluru was immense. The program was well defined, covering all major facets of Project and Program& Portfolio management in an industry context, and supported with selected case studies. Specifically most important thing I learned is the concept of “Design Structure Matrix” which is unique and is solution to  lot of real life scenarios  and  learning it  from Prof. Anshuman Tripathy himself was quite an experience .apart from the learning  Thanks for the superb hospitality at IIM- B  and for memories that I will cherish for years to come."
-Mr. Amit D Choudhari, Asst. General Manager, Reliance Industries Ltd.
