Programme Overview

“Storytelling” is one of the forms of creative expression humans use to comprehend and communicate information and experiences. Stories enable people to give meaning to their existence, pass on knowledge, change behaviour, understand & learn from their history, and plan strategies for the future. It has been observed that humans can simultaneously activate up to seven areas in their brains while listening to stories, and it is worth noting that the human brain’s image-processing zone works 60,000 times faster than the language-processing zone during storytelling sessions. Stories have been a natural and intrinsic form of human communication and have been a powerful and effective means of connecting, persuading, influencing, and leading people.

Programme Objective
The course is designed with the following specific objectives and learning outcomes:

  • To understand the various simple techniques of storytelling.
  • Practice the art of connection stories (forming bonds with listeners); influence stories (change opinions and overcome objections); clarity stories (past context, change and its impact, new behaviours needed, and future actions and success factors
  • To apply this practice in various business contexts and hone the art of developing stories to influence, persuade and change diverse stakeholders

Programme Content

This is a hands-on, practice-oriented course and hence designed as a workshop. This program will actively involve the participants in learning the technique of storytelling by practising each of the themes discussed in the class. The program will cover the concepts of storytelling, elements and techniques of effective storytelling, and the use of humour. Post establishing a strong foundation on the concepts and techniques of storytelling, the program will focus on crafting stories to shape values, influence & persuade, tell stories on backgrounds of data, build rapport, and overcome objections.

Key Benefits/Takeaways
Business Storytelling enables professionals to develop the skills and strategies to transform dry professional messages into emotionally engaging, credibility-enhancing experiences that inspire meaning, belief, and action.

The special tools, techniques, and structures in this program will help participants bring the power of stories into their day-to-day business communication. They will enable the participants to connect, engage & inspire, and ensure that everything they share has a lasting impression on their listeners. This course will be conducted in a workshop style and will illustrate practically by making participants practice the various storytelling techniques that enable them to build this critical leadership capability.

Pedagogy
The pedagogy will include cases, videos, anecdote circles (group discussions designed to elicit stories from others, through skilful facilitation), and individual practice sessions in class that will hone the skills. The course does not intend to teach a case but will use short business cases across multiple domains. Students will practice linking a story to reinforce their decision.
