The Open Network for Carbon Markets (ONCM) Vision Paper and Technology Position Paper were published in July 2026, marking an important milestone in the development of an open, interoperable digital infrastructure for carbon markets. Co-developed by IIM Bangalore’s Center for Digital Public Goods (CDPG), Networks for Humanity, and the Indian Institute of Forest Management (IIFM), ONCM is designed to connect stakeholders across the carbon credit lifecycle through shared digital infrastructure that enhances trust, transparency, interoperability, and auditability.
The Vision Paper outlines how ONCM can reduce transaction costs, strengthen provenance, and improve market access for farmers, forest communities, project developers, registries, exchanges, buyers, financiers, and regulators. Complementing this, the Technology Position Paper—developed following the ONCM Technology Sprint held at IIM Bangalore—presents a collaborative technology roadmap that brings together existing digital capabilities into a coherent, interoperable network architecture. Together, these papers provide a foundation for building a scalable, trusted, and inclusive digital ecosystem for India’s emerging carbon markets and future cross-border carbon value chains.
As ONCM evolves from concept to implementation, we invite researchers, policymakers, technology providers, carbon market practitioners, and ecosystem partners to read the papers, share their feedback and ideas, and contribute to shaping the next phase of this open initiative. Building population-scale digital infrastructure requires collective effort, and ONCM welcomes collaborators who share the vision of creating an open, interoperable, and resilient carbon market ecosystem.
