Transformation of IMR

  • IIMB Management Review (IMR) launched as biannual in July 1986 with Prof Basu Ghosh as Editor – focus on management applications and public policy in the context of Indian management – 7 volumes published
  • IMR re-launched in 1996 as a quarterly with Vol 8 – Prof. N Balasubramanian, Finance & Accounting, as Chief Editor – repositioned to reach out to management practitioners with all materials being fully researched and validated
    • The IMR Student Essay Competition introduced in 1999 seeking to recognise and reward excellence in management research and writing – the award-winning essays were published in the journal

    Under the editorship of Prof. B Mahadevan (Production & Operations Management), which commenced with Vol 15 Issue No. 3 September 2003, IMR built on its strengths to position itself as a premier management journal with fresh thinking and newer approaches – focus on conceptual and methodological rigour – increasing refereed content

  • Round Table and Interview features reformatted for rigour of approach, strengthening of academic component while retaining practitioner focus
  • New features introduced – Management Educator’s Forum to explore issues germane to management pedagogy; On the Anvil, a preview of the ongoing research in the field of management
  • Initially open to students of IIMB programmes, in 2003–2004, the fifth edition of the Student Essay Competition was opened to all IIMs, and the following year, 2004–2005, to postgraduate and doctoral students of all Indian management institutions
  • The IMR Conference (IMRC) – theme-based, biennial – launched in 2004 with the aim of bringing together ‘best in class’ practitioners, educators and researchers together to share their knowledge – Selected papers published in IMR
  • The following editions of IMRC were held between 2004 and 2010.
    • IMRC 2004: Innovation: The Next Lever for Value Creation; 17 – 18 Dec 2004
    • IMRC 2006: Global Competitiveness through Outsourcing: Implications for Services and Manufacturing; 13 – 15 July 2006
    • IMRC 2008: Global Supply Chain Management: Role of Emerging Economies; 22 – 24 Dec 2008; organised jointly by IMR, the Supply Chain Management Centre, IIMB (SCMC) and the EADS-SMI Chair for Sourcing and Supply
    • IMRC 2010: Global Competitiveness through Human Resource Management; 22 – 24 July 2010
  • IMR entered into an agreement with EBSCO, leading online database for dissemination of content, May 2003 – Dec 2009
  • On the Technology front, the following innovations were made:
    • Compact Disc (CD) version of journal introduced with Vol 16-2, June 2004 --Back Issues from 1996 available in set of two CDs
    • Journal tracker to track progress of articles, maintain database of contributors and referees
    • Subscription package to maintain database of subscribers and track renewals
    • IMR Conference website designed and maintained
  • Prof. V Ravi Anshuman (Finance & Accounting) took over as Chief Editor with  Vol 19 No 4, December 2007
  • IMR initiated and instituted the country's first annual doctoral students conference for management scholars in 2009. The first IMR Doctoral Conference (IMRDC) was held on 27th November 2009 – IMRDC aimed to recognise quality research in management in India carried out by doctoral students; to alert and sensitize young scholars to the pursuit of rich research opportunities in the Indian context and to encourage them to pursue these opportunities. Today, IMRDC has grown into a milestone event for Indian and international doctoral students featuring select paper presentations, keynote lectures and invited talks, panel discussions, and workshops from leading researchers, academics and practitioners in the field.

  • Tejas@iimb, a knowledge portal showcasing student-faculty collaborative research was launched in September 2009
  • IMR entered into a co-publishing agreement with Elsevier in December 2009
  • Prof. Nagasimha Balakrishna Kanagal (Marketing) took over as Editor-in-Chief with Vol 24 No 1, March 2012
  • IMR Silver Jubilee Volume – Vol 25, 2013 – published with invited articles from eminent researchers (put through a single fast track review) in each issue

  • IMR listed in the Australian Business Deans Council (ABDC) Quality Journal List 2013, ranked “B”
  • Prof. Ashok Thampy (Finance & Accounting) took over as Editor in Chief with Vol 30 No 2, June 2018 
  • Twelfth IMR Doctoral Conference – IMRDC 2021, 4, 5 & 6 Feb 2021 and thirteenth IMRDC edition IMRDC 2022, 20, 21 and 22 Jan 2022 held in virtual mode on account of the COVID-19 pandemic
  • Prof. Jishnu Hazra (Production & Operations Management) took over as Editor-in-Chief with Vol 33 No 2, June 2021
  • As of 2022 IMR is a Gold Open Access journal, free for download and use by readers. The Article Publishing Charge (APC) is covered by the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore
  • As of 2023 IMR is a solely digital journal

  • In 2023 IMR received its first Impact Factor of 1.7; 5-year Impact Factor 2.6
  • 15th  edition – IMRDC 2024 -- 2 & 3 Feb 2024 – was one of the events held to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore
