DAC: Powering Next-Generation Digital Address Infrastructure

The Centre for Digital Public Goods (CDPG) at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore developed DAC (Digital Address Code) — India’s Digital Address Layer — building on DIGIPIN, a nationwide geo-coded addressing system developed by the Department of Posts in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad, IISc, NRSC, and ISRO. DAC assigns a unique 10-character alphanumeric code to approximately 4m × 4m grids across India based on geographic coordinates, enabling precise digital addressing and improving logistics, service delivery, and emergency response. The initiative represents a significant step toward building a robust digital address infrastructure for India’s evolving digital public ecosystem.
