Prof. J. Bandyopadhyay served at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) from February 23, 1978 to 1987, during the formative years of the institution. With a Ph.D. in Material Science from IIT Kanpur and post-doctoral experience at the MIT Center for International Studies, he brought to IIMB a pioneering interdisciplinary perspective that connected science, technology, and society. His association with the Education and Energy Sectors at IIMB was marked by his efforts to expand the institute’s vision beyond conventional business management. Prof. Bandyopadhyay conceived and coordinated the Social Involvement Project (SIP) — an innovative component of the Post Graduate Programme (PGP) — that immersed students in real-world issues within India’s non-organised sectors. These projects examined local schools, cooperatives, and traditional systems like the Mumbai dabbawalas, sensitizing future managers to the social dimensions of development. He also introduced electives such as Management of Science and Technology and contributed to the Doctoral (FPM) and Executive Education programmes. His research extended to forestry, rural energy, and environmental policy, including influential studies on social forestry in Kolar and the Dehradun limestone mining issue, which attracted national attention. His leadership in academic coordination, research, and consultancy — notably in energy policy, technology management, and environment — reflected his commitment to socially responsible management education. His interview highlights his enduring message: the importance of research, innovation, and institutional memory in sustaining IIMB’s excellence.
