Professor B. K. Chandrashekarserved on the faculty of the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) from 25 July 1977 until his retirement on 28 February 1997.A member of the Economics and Social Sciences Area and a minor member of the Centre for Agriculture and Rural Development (CARD), he played a pioneering role in integrating legal studies within management education. He was among the first faculty members to teach the core Business Law course in the Post Graduate Programme (PGP), while also contributing to Management Development Programmes (MDPs) and other executive education initiatives. His teaching covered Business Law, administrative law, environmental and planning legislation, property law, and constitutional dimensions of governance
Professor Chandrashekar’s researchinterests spanned industrial law, the Indian legal system, land reforms, rent control legislation, judicial delays, women’s working conditions, farmers’ movements, and international trade and development. He contributed to research workshops and seminars,including collaborative programmes with the International Centre for Law in Development. As Dean (Research) from 1980 to 1982, he introduced significant reforms relating to research administration, faculty development, research staffing, and institutionalfunding. He also served as Coordinator of the Library Committee and as Director-in-Charge during a critical phase of institutional growth.
Beyond academia, Professor Chandrashekar actively engaged with public policy, industrial relations, trade union movements, and government service, later holding positions such as Member of the Legislative Council, Minister in the Government of Karnataka, and Chairman of the Karnataka Legislative Council. His reflections highlight the importance of academic freedom, collegial governance, social responsibility, and the role of management institutions in addressing contemporary societal challenges.
