Professor S.N. Chary served at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) from 13 September 1976 to 30 November 2003 as a faculty member in the Production and Operations Management Area, while also contributing extensively to the Energy Sector and interdisciplinary institutional initiatives. During his tenure, he taught across multiple programmes including the Post Graduate Programme (PGP), Fellow Programme in Management (FPM), Management Development Programmes (MDPs), and Organisation Based Programmes (OBPs). His teaching portfolio included courses such as Production and Operations Management, Project Management, Operations Strategy, Environmental Management, Safety, Maintenance and Quality, and Management of Quality and Productivity.

Professor Chary played a pioneering role in executive education and public-sector management training, conducting programmes for organizations such as BHEL, Electricity Boards, the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR), and the Government of Karnataka. He led nationally significant consultancy and research projects, notably the large-scale reorganization study for the Telecommunications Wing of the Government of India, involving organizational restructuring, manpower planning, and productivity enhancement.

A prolific scholar and author, he published influential textbooks and research works including Production and Operations Management, Environmental Management: An Indian Perspective, and Managing India’s Planning. His intellectual contributions extended to leadership studies, environmental sustainability, planning, and management education reform.
