Professor V. B. Kaujalgi served the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) from 1 December 1975 to 31 October 2003, contributing significantly to the Institute’s development during its formative decades. Affiliated with the Quantitative Management and Information Systems (QMIS) Area, he played a pioneering role in establishing computer science, management information systems, and information technology education at IIMB. Joining the Institute from IIT Bombay, where he had specialized in Operations Research and Computer Science, he introduced some of the earliest computer-oriented courses for the Post Graduate Programme (PGP), including COBOL programming, database management systems, and management information systems.

Professor Kaujalgi was instrumental in the growth of IIMB’s computing infrastructure. As Coordinator of the Data Processing Centre and later the Computer Facilities Committee, he led initiatives that transformed the Institute’s technological capabilities, including the acquisition of early computing systems, implementation of campus-wide networking, adoption of ERNET connectivity, and outsourcing of computer centre operations. He also coordinated the Computer Aided Management (CAM) Centre, a major government-supported initiative involving research, software development, decision-support systems, and industry collaborations.

Beyond teaching and research, he contributed extensively to institutional governance through committees related to admissions, research, academics, promotions, and campus development. His external engagements included service on Reserve Bank of India committees and boards of major public-sector banks. Reflecting on his years at IIMB, Professor Kaujalgi highlights the collaborative spirit of the Institute’s early faculty, the importance of technological innovation, and the enduring value of maintaining connections between retired and serving faculty members.
