Interview with Professor J. Philip

Professor J. Philip served as Director of the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) from April 1985 to January 1991, bringing to the Institute a distinctive combination of academic leadership and industry experience. Prior to joining IIMB, he held academic and administrative roles at Xavier Labour Relations Institute (XLRI), served as Principal of the Central Management College at the Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL), and worked as Vice President (Human Resources) at the Oberoi Group of Hotels. His expertise lay primarily in management education, human resource development, and organisational leadership.

During his tenure at IIMB, Professor Philip played a pivotal role in redefining the Institute’s academic orientation. He led the transition from sector-specific postgraduate programmes to a mainstream business administration model, thereby strengthening the Post Graduate Programme (PGP) and revitalising the Fellow Programme in Management (FPM). His initiatives included instituting faculty workload norms and performance reviews inspired by the principles of Management by Objectives, expanding the intake of PGP students, and encouraging faculty engagement across teaching, research, and executive education programmes such as Management Development Programmes (MDPs) and Organisation-Based Programmes (OBPs).

Professor Philip also promoted research and consultancy through collaborative studies with industry organisations including BPCL and Karnataka Finance Corporation. He contributed to academic publishing through the establishment of the IIMB Management Review journal and encouraged case development and applied research. His governance reforms strengthened administrative delegation, faculty development initiatives, and institutional discipline.

Reflecting on his tenure, Professor Philip emphasised the importance of institutional culture, academic rigor, and stakeholder engagement. His leadership restored organisational stability at IIMB and helped position the Institute within the mainstream of Indian business education while laying foundations for its subsequent academic growth and global aspirations.
