3 April, 2023, Bengaluru: The Mizuho India Japan Study Centre (MIJSC) at IIM Bangalore will host a webinar titled, ‘Creating a Global Lingua Franca: Internet’s Role in Creating a Common Language & Bridging the Language Divide’, as part of the centre’s flagship lecture series ‘Tatsujin-Speak’, that is, ‘Expert-Speak’, on 21st April 2023 (Friday), from 4 pm to 5 pm. The session will be held virtually via Zoom.

Abstract

Language has been a major cultural component in building strong harmonious communities. Culture and language are so closely intertwined that one wonders whether one can understand the culture of a society without accessing its language. People are more comfortable engaging and transacting within their native language and their own culture (which can include more than one language). But in a global economy, intercultural communication should be embraced. However, this is easier said than done.

Internet is seen as something that is infinite and which could be freely explored, thereby helping bridge the gap in intercultural communication. The relationship between internet and language is a growing area of policy interest and academic studies. The story emerging is one where language profoundly affects your experience of the internet. The internet has given access to the world’s information to everyone on this planet, theoretically, and has built connections between likeminded souls, irrespective of age, gender and nationality. The questions however remain, such as, ‘Can it truly bridge the communication gap between societies? In today’s digital world, can it help build a new lingua franca for the world, replacing English?’, etc.

It is famously said that ‘Internet does not connect machines, it connects people’. Language is just as important in building human connections online as it is offline; it forms the basis of how users identify with each other, the lines on which exclusion and inclusion are often drawn and the boundaries within which communities grow around common interests.

Whenever there is more than one language (or dialect) competing for political, economic and cultural space, there is bound to be conflict. The larger the number of competing languages, the greater the likelihood that language will become a source of political conflict. The moot question is: can internet take on the role of bridging the language divide and thereby create a lingua franca or common language for the world?

In this talk, Malavika Harita will share her belief that to create and communicate effectively, one needs not only a language in which one is comfortable with, but also requires a broader lingua franca and technology to disseminate ideas to a wider audience. She considers technology as an enabler rather than a creator of communication, which is a point currently under debate with the rise of ChatGPT and ArtAI. In today's volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous world, she seeks to suggest that a combination of a comfortable language, the power of technology and a common lingua franca can aid in the creation and dissemination of ideas worth sharing, as TedX calls it. The internet also becomes a valuable source of reference material, visuals, inspiration, and more. This talk will offer insights into the role of language and technology in effective communication.

About the speaker

Malavika Harita founded Brand Circle in 2018, a Consultancy Firm working in the areas of Digital Communication, Storytelling, Mentoring Start-ups, Women Entrepreneurs and Corporate Leaders. She is Resident Mentor at IIMB’s NSRCEL, where she is actively involved in mentoring start-ups in the profit and non-profit sectors. She has also mentored start-ups at various other incubators including Kerala Startup Mission, T-Hub, Gopalakrishnan-Deshpande Centre at IIT Madras, IIMV Field at IIM Visakhapatnam and IIM Lucknow Incubation Centre. 

She had also founded and ran Saatchi & Saatchi Focus in India for 25 years where she worked on brands like Bosch, Coats, Reliance Polymers, Infosys, Microsoft, Astra Zeneca, Pfizer, Novartis, Mead Johnson, AIS and Novo Nordisk, amongst others. She has 40 years of experience in communication and entrepreneurship. Brand Consultancy, Strategic Planning and Training are her focus areas. 

After her Accountancy training and MBA from IIM Bangalore, Malavika joined HMT Watches. She then ran her own interior design and packaging firm before joining Saatchi in 1993 after a stint at Mudra Communications. Malavika trained briefly at Saatchi & Saatchi in London, New Zealand and Singapore.

She was one of the first Chevening Gurukul scholars, selected by the British Government for a special program under Lord Meghnad Desai at the London School of Economics on Globalization. Malavika is the first woman to win the Distinguished Alumni Award from IIM Bangalore. She was also the first woman to deliver the Foundation Day lecture at IIMB. She is also a TEDx speaker. 

She is on the Board of Governors of IIM Bangalore, on the Board of Governors of IIM Visakhapatnam, on the Governing Council of Mount Carmel College and on the Advisory Board of NSRCEL. Malavika was President of the IIMB Alumni Association and the Advertising Club Bangalore. She also teaches Marketing and Communication at various postgraduate institutes of management and communication in India and abroad.
