Abstract: Prof. Maung K. Sein’s thesis is that academic research must eventually impact practice and societal issues and to do so, academia must produce knowledge that is useful for practice. Proactive research approaches such as Design Science Research (DSR) and the niche Action Design Research (ADR) are appropriate research approaches to do so, especially since partnership with practitioners as co-researchers is an inherent principle of ADR. One of the ways to disseminate research outcomes is publishing in the right outlets.

In his talk, Prof. Maung K. Sein will first discuss what impactful research is and then present some ideas of how we can conduct impactful research, and will finally share thoughts on how to disseminate impactful research.

Speaker Profile: Dr. Maung K. Sein is a Visiting Professor at the School for Economics, Innovation, and Technology, Kristiania University College, Norway, and an Emeritus Professor at the School of Business, University of South-Eastern Norway. After working in practice, he earned his PhD from Indiana University, USA. In an academic career spanning 34 years, he has served at several universities in USA, Norway, Sweden, Thailand and Finland as permanent faculty, visiting professor or visiting scholar. While he has conducted research in a variety of areas, he currently focusses on ICT for Development (ICT4D) and proactive research approaches, especially Action Design Research.

He has published widely in MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, The Information Society, Information Systems Journal, etc. He has extensive editorial experience in the IS area, including as Senior Editor of Journal of AIS, Associate Editor at MIS Quarterly, MIS Quarterly Executive, Information Systems Journal, and guest-editing special issues of Journal of AIS, Communications of the ACM, Scandinavian Journal of Information Systems, and Sustainability. He serves or has served on the Editorial advisory boards of JAIS, IJIM and ISJ. An avid proponent of proactive research approaches, he regularly conducts seminars and workshops on Design Research, especially Action Design Research (ADR) at different universities around the world and at conferences. In 2021, he received the prestigious AIS Fellow Award in recognition of his global contributions to the Information Systems discipline. In 2022, he was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award by DESRIST for contribution to the Design Science Research field.
