IIMB’s R&P office to host seminar titled ‘Condorcet Jury Theorem in a Spatial Model of Elections’ on June 14

June 03, 2019, Bengaluru: The Office of Research and Publications (R&P) at IIM Bangalore will host a research seminar titled: ‘Condorcet Jury Theorem in a Spatial Model of Elections’, on June 14 (Friday), 2019, from 02.30 pm, at Classroom K11. The talk will be delivered by Sourav Bhattacharya, Royal Holloway College (Area: Economics & Social Sciences).

Does the electoral outcome reflect the true preference of the majority? I show that when there is uncertainty about who gains and who loses from a given alternative, the majority-preferred alternative may lose the election. This insight helps explain well-known phenomena like status quo bias in referenda and growing incumbency advantage since the advent of mass media.
