About the talk: Ever since childhood, we are told to work hard, score good marks in school and college, and get into a good institution like IIM Bangalore. There also, we are pushed to take up ‘useful subjects’, so that we can ‘max’ and get a good job. We finally land a reasonable job, marry a suitable partner, live in a nice house, and get a nice car. We repeat the same process with our young. Then one day in our forties, we wake up and ask ourselves, ‘Is this what life was all about?’ We seem to have sleepwalked through life, intent on the next promotion, while life passed us by. An unfulfilled life is a tragic loss. People need to be taught the difference between ‘making a living’ and ‘making a life.’

'Making a Life' is not about ‘finding' yourself but ‘creating' yourself. Gurcharan Das will lead the discussion by telling three stories of people who managed to make a life. They cultivated a certain attitude which helped them give a purpose to their lives.

About the speaker: Gurcharan Das was CEO, Procter & Gamble India and later Managing Director, Procter & Gamble Worldwide (Strategic Planning). He graduated with honours from Harvard University and later attended Harvard Business School (AMP). He is on a number of Boards and is a regular speaker for the management of the world’s top corporations.

After a 30-year career, he took early retirement to become an author. Some of his books include, ‘Kama: The Riddle of Desire’, ‘India Unbound’, and ‘The Difficulty of Being Good: On the Subtle Art of Dharma’. His book, ‘India Grows at Night: A Liberal Case for a Strong State’ was on FT’s list of the Best Books in 2013. His other literary works include a novel, ‘A Fine Family’, a book of essays, ‘The Elephant Paradigm’, and an anthology, ‘Three Plays’. He also writes columns for various publications.
