Roundtable on ‘Role of Responsible Business for Achieving Sustainable Development Goals with Focus on Livelihood Enhancement’ on March 27

IIMB’s Centre for Corporate Governance & Citizenship and HCL Foundation Academy to host roundtable, which seeks to explore how corporates can align their Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives with Sustainable Development Goals

27 March, 2019, Bengaluru: The Centre for Corporate Governance and Citizenship (CCGC) at IIM Bangalore, in association with the HCL Foundation Academy, will host a roundtable on ‘Role of Responsible Business for Achieving Sustainable Development Goals with Focus on Livelihood Enhancement’, on March 27 (Wednesday), 2019, at the Management Development Centre (MDC) of IIMB.

The roundtable seeks to explore how corporates can align their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The focus areas of conversation would be: how to develop effective tools for measuring impact, scaling implementation and sustaining projects from medium to long term, through community ownership models. A key paradigm shift in corporate strategy today lies in embedding such initiatives into the core business of the corporation. The narrative would thus seek to link these efforts with development of more responsible brands that also care for national/global sustainable development.

The HCL Foundation Academy has decided to support IIMB-CCGC for some of their projects, especially the www.teachcsr.com initiative. As part of this exercise, HCL Foundation Academy and IIM Bangalore-CCGC will be hosting a series of CSR and SDG roundtables, dialogues and conversations, with relevant stakeholders, as part of HCLF Academy outreach. This roundtable is the first such initiative.

Some of the key issues to be discussed include: how responsible businesses can promote skill building for entrepreneurship so that those trained can also enhance opportunities for livelihood of others; how to align CSR (Schedule VII, Section 135, Companies Act, 2013) with SDGs to create value and develop more responsible brands; measurable key parameters and indicators that must be part of skill development projects so that one can assess, evaluate and enhance outcomes, and 'way forward', effective methods of collaboration in pursuing SDGs through CSR.

The speakers include senior leaders from industry, civil society and the academia. Nidhi Pundhir, Director CSR, HCL Foundation, will speak about the HCL Foundation Academy. Professor Vasanthi Srinivasan, faculty in the Organizational Behavior & Human Resources Management area of IIMB, who runs the website www.teachcsr.com, which has about 900 members and promotes teaching in Business Ethics and CSR in India, will make a presentation on Teach CSR under IIM Bangalore.

The first panel discussion will be about ‘Beneficiary to Benefactor: How responsible business can promote skill building for entrepreneurship so that those trained can also enhance opportunities for livelihood of others’. The session would focus on key learnings through sharing of live case studies and CSR projects. Nikhil Pant, Managing Partner, Shaktishi (Shaktishi is the Implementing Agency for HCL Foundation Academy), will be the moderator. The panellists are: Shukla Bose, Founder, CEO, Parikrma Humanity Foundation; Jitendra Chaddah, Sr. Director, Operations and Strategy, Intel India; Shanti Raghavan, Founder, Enable India; Ramesh Swamy, Trustee, Unnati, and Sangeeta Mansur, Sustainability Professor, Faculty Christ College Bangalore.

The second panel discussion will be on ‘Measuring Impact: Parameters/Indicators to achieve visible outcomes, scale and sustainability for livelihood enhancement leading to achieving SDGs linked with Schedule VII of Section 135, Companies Act 2013 on Corporate Social Responsibility’:

• SDG 5: Gender Equality

• SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth

• SDG 10:  Reduced Inequalities

• SDG 17:  Partnerships for the Goals

The session would focus on measurable key parameters and indicators that must be part of skill development projects so that one can assess, evaluate and enhance outcomes. Professor Prateek Raj, IIMB faculty from the Strategy area, would moderate the session. The panellists are: Kamal Singh, Executive Director, UNGCN; Santhosh Jayaram, Partner & Head - Sustainability and CSR Advisory, KPMG; Niranjan Khatri, Founder, iSambhav, and Sunil Chakrapani – VP, CSR and Partnerships, Deshpande Foundation.

The CCGC was created in 2003 to bring, under a single umbrella, research, teaching and policy support related activities of the faculty in the field of corporate governance, ethics, corporate social responsibility and sustainability. The centre offers courses on Corporate Governance and Social Responsibility at the MBA level and also conducts specialized training programmes and workshops for company directors and senior management in the private and public sectors. It provides policy support in the field of corporate legislation and regulation. A core area of the centre's activities focuses on research on Corporate Governance and related issues of responsible business and corporate responsibility.
