Professor A Damodaran appointed to High Level Panel on Global Resource assessment of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity

Professor A Damodaran has been appointed to the High-level International Panel (HLP 2) on the Global Assessment of Resources for Implementing the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020, established with the financial support of the United Kingdom and the European Commission.

Apart from Dr Damodaran, the panel comprises 14 members (including senior policy makers and environmental financing experts) drawn from North America, South and Central America, Africa and Asia. The mission of the Panel is to provide strategic leadership and guidance to the research and work with UNEP-WCMC and the CBD Secretariat to draw out key messages from its research that are relevant to implementing the Convention at the local level.

In 2011, Professor Damodaran was appointed to the 5 member international Expert Panel on Resource Assessment for the Sixth Replenishment of the Washington D.C. based Global Environmental Facility, which presented its report to the Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity at the 11th Conference of Parties held at Hyderabad, India during October 2012.

Professor Damodaran was member of India's delegation to COP11 and successfully led the negotiations on Resource mobilization and Biodiversity financing on behalf of India. His case study of Biodiversity Financing utilizing a bottom-up approach is held as a model framework for other emerging economies and developing countries to adopt.

Professor Damodaran is the author of the well received book "Encircling the Seamless: India, Climate Change and Global Commons", published by OUP in 2010 besides papers on climate and biodiversity financing in international peer reviewed Journals. He has worked extensively on climate and biodiversity financing and has acted in an advisory capacity to the Ministries of Finance , Power and Environment and Forests, Government of India and also executed critical projects on technology transfer and climate financing for the UNEP, World Bank, Asian Development Bank, the DFID, GIZ and WIPO.

A Damodaran is Professor in Economics & Social Sciences area at IIMB. He is Chair Professor IPR Chair on IP Management (MHRD).  He obtained his PhD from University of Kerala. He was awarded the Homi Baba Fellowship in 2004. He is the member of many International Expert Groups in the field of environment management. He has consulted for the Government of India including the Ministries of Finance and Environment and Forests. His international consultancy experience includes assignments with the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, UNDP, UNEP, ESCAP, DFID and GIZ. He has held Post-Doctoral and Visiting Faculty assignments at the University of California- Berkeley, Univesity of Manitoba, Canada, University of Bonn, Germany, St Petersburg University, Russia and the United Nations University- Institute of Advanced Studies, Yokohama, Japan.
