Vice President M Hamid Ansari releases book by IIMB Professor A Damodaran

"Encircling the Seamless: India, Climate Change, and the Global Commons", a book authored by IIMB Professor A Damodaran was released by M Hamid Ansari, the honourable Vice President of India at a function held in New Delhi on July 21, 2010. Union Minister for Environment and Forests, Jairam Ramesh was also present at the event.

The book, published by Oxford University Press, focuses on global commons within the larger canvas of the world's political and economic landscape. The book delves into the global environmental negotiations against the backdrop of complex political relations, the climate change conventions and multilateral environmental assessments and their effect on special interest groups.

On the occasion, Vice President Ansari said: "This is a book with a difference and I am glad to have been given the chance of browsing through it on the excuse of this afternoon's gathering. It deals with a seemingly familiar subject but approaches it innovatively and meaningfully. In the process, it questions, perhaps demolishes, some major premises," said Vice President Ansari after releasing the book.

He added that Professor Damodaran puts forth an important proposition: that global commons are, in the first place, local commons. "His conclusion is equally telling - that global commons can be better conserved if they are de-instrumentalized and de-securitized and linked to the fight for the local commons. This would necessitate a fundamental paradigm shift," he added. (VicePresident of India.nic.in)

The books 'Encircling the Seamless - India Climate Change, and the Global Commons' maps India's multifaceted nationhood, the diversity of its rural scene and the challenges of seamlessness brought in the power of its information technology; finally reaching across the borders to the world of industrial complexes in the North that produce and spew chemicals for disposals and re-use in the South.

Viewing global environmental movements, the book discusses the pattern of global  negotiations from the environmental summit capitals of the world, Rio, Kyoto, Cartagena, Bonn, Stockholm, Montreal, Geneva, Basel, and Copenhagen among other graphically portray the plight of a post-modern world that grapples with the problems of climate, land degradations, chemical transfers and biodiversity.

Professor A Damodaran is Professor in Economics and Social Sciences area and MHRD Chair Professor on IPR. He joined IIMB in August 2005. He has been associated with various national and international universities, institutes, and multi-lateral agencies such as GSOM, St Petersburg University (Russia), University of Wageningen, (the Netherlands), Indian Institute of Plantation Management, Department of Economics and Technological Change, University of Bonn (Germany), Natural Resource Institute, University of Manitoba, Canada, University of Berkley, California (USA), and the Center for Development Research (ZEF).
