Masami Shimizu, Executive Office Fellow of Mitsubishi Heavy Industry Ltd., will deliver the talk which will revolve around how Japanese firms choose and execute strategies to gain competitiveness in the current global manufacturing scenario

13 February, 2023, Bengaluru: The cohort of IIM Bangalore’s two-year MBA for working professionals, Post Graduate Programme in Enterprise Management (PGPEM), will host Masami Shimizu, Executive Office Fellow of Mitsubishi Heavy Industry Ltd., for a talk titled, ‘How Japanese Manufacturing Firms Maintain Competitiveness for Sustainable Growth’, on 18th February 2023 (Saturday), from 5:45 pm to 6:45 pm, at Classroom P11. The offline session will be open for the entire IIMB community.

The talk will revolve around how Japanese firms choose and execute strategies to gain competitiveness in the current global manufacturing scenario. The key issue to be discussed will be the strategic content that manufacturing firms choose. Two parts of case studies will comprise the session. The first part will focus on Time Based Management deployed by Misumi. The analysis describes how the company grew more than seven-fold based on time-based-management. The second part will focus on Masami Shimizu’s current doctoral research on Growth Models for SMEs. The analysis, based on 100 hours of field study of Japanese manufacturing firms, clarifies how SMEs manage sustainable growth in changing trends from local Japan to global Asia and the equilibrium of global value chains. The talk will be followed by an interactive session with students.

About the speaker: Masami Shimizu has been with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries for over 30 years, starting with roles focused on managing machining and assembly in 1978, to being the President of Mitsubishi Heavy Industry Printing and Packaging Machinery Ltd., and Senior Vice President of Mitsubishi Heavy Industry Machinery Systems Ltd. In 2018, he was elected as the Executive Office Fellow of Mitsubishi Heavy Industry Ltd. 

He has a Bachelor’s in Aerospace Engineering and Master’s in Mechanical Engineering from Nihon University in Japan. He also has a Master’s in Manufacturing Systems Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA, and an Advanced Certificate for Executives in Management, Innovation and Technology from MIT, USA. He topped his MBA class at Ritsumeikan University and is currently pursuing his PhD in the Graduate School of Economics at Kyoto University. He is member of Professional Engineers Japan which is certified by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. His areas of professional specialization are Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Management for Manufacturing Systems and Industrial Machinery.
