The ‘Meijin-Samvad’ discussion series involves a select group of panelists from India and Japan, who share different perspectives on a particular topic, with a larger audience.

The panelists for the session would be: Dr. Dhavan Shah, Louis A. & Mary E. Maier-Bascom Professor, Director of the Mass Communication Research Centre (MCRC) and Scientific Director in the Center for Health Enhancement System Studies (CHESS) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Dr. Srijan Kumar, Assistant Professor at CSE, College of Computing at the Georgia Institute of Technology. The moderator of the conversation would be Saideep Rathnam, Chief Operating Officer, Mizuho India Japan Study Centre, IIMB.
Abstract: In today's digital age, misinformation and biased content are growing excessively. This creates an enormous challenge in our society, as people are severely impacted by such content through multiple effects such as making uninformed decisions, being exposed to harmful content, and feeling isolated from others. Many factors that contribute to the spread of misinformation and bias have been identified, such as, easy accessibility to social media platforms, less faith in established media houses and lax implementation of privacy laws of the land.
This exposure to misinformation and bias has a lot of negative consequences, such as people ending up casting their ballots for the incorrect candidate or consuming medicines based on misleading medical information available, etc. There are several things that can be done to combat the circulation of fake news and misinformation, including the promotion of media literacy, encouraging fact-checking organizations and tightening law implementation protocols.
The webinar seeks to explore the role of social media algorithms in amplifying bias and shaping public discourse. It will also try to explore ethical considerations in AI-powered content moderation, focusing on the delicate balance between preserving free speech and mitigating the effects of misinformation. The session also aims to explore the impact of deep fakes on public trust and the need for developing countermeasures, understanding the technology behind deep fakes, and exploring strategies to detect and combat their dissemination, thereby rebuilding public trust and protecting the integrity of information. The panelists would also discuss how hate speech and online harassment could be combated and explain how technological tools, coupled with societal approaches, can play a pivotal role in creating a safer online space.
