The 6th Pan IIM World Conference gets off to a start with a pre-conference workshop on Dec 12 at IIMB

12 December, 2018: Indian Institute of Management Bangalore is hosting Directors of all the IIMs across the country, as well as paper presenters, at the 6th Pan IIM World Conference that began on campus here today.

The four-day conference commenced with a pre conference workshop on Structural Equation Modeling, by Dr Israr Qureshi, Professor at Research School of Management, Australian National University.

Structural Equations Modeling (SEM) has become the standard for model building and hypothesis testing in organizational research and the behavioural sciences, especially when models involve latent variables. By incorporating measurement error in the process of model testing, SEM corrects for routine errors that creep in due to imperfect tools/measures for acquiring data. Use of SEM helps scholars relate their data more strongly to the substantive theory as it tests measurement and structural models simultaneously. This workshop was intended to provide participants with the foundational knowledge and skills needed to use structural equations modelling (SEM) to test substantive theoretical questions. The focus was on conceptual as well as practical aspects of correctly analyzing and interpreting measurement models, path analyses, and latent variable structural models. The workshop drew on measurement theory, construct validity, and the logic of theory testing to assess the quality of research using covariance structural equations models.

Dr Israr Qureshi is a Professor at Research School of Management, Australian National University. He is currently involved in multiple research projects that investigate various aspects of social value creation through sustainable development, social entrepreneurship, and ICT. He is also engaged in various initiatives to address climate change. He uses both qualitative and quantitative approaches, and his research has been published in Academy of Management Learning and Education, European Journal of Information Systems, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, Journal of Management, Journal of Management Studies, Journal of Organization Behavior, MIS Quarterly, Organizational Research Methods, Organization Studies, among others.

Dr Qureshi’s workshop was followed by a workshop on publishing in the Academy of Management Journal.

The workshop, led by Professor Jason D. Shaw, who is the Editor of Academy of Management Journal, and Professor Eero Vaara, Associate Editor, provided useful information to researchers in management who are working on areas that are of interest to the journal. The workshop provided inputs on both quantitative and qualitative papers.

Dr Jason D. Shaw is Yeung Kin Man Professor in Business Administration, Chair Professor of Management, Head of Department of Management and Marketing, and Director of the Centre for Leadership and Innovation in the Faculty of Business at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Arkansas in 1997.

Dr. Eero Vaara (Ph.D. Econ) is a Professor of Organization and Management at Aalto University School of Business, Helsinki, Finland. He is also the leader of the Strategy Work Program (strategywork.org).

He is a permanent Visiting Professor at EMLYON Business School, France, and a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at Lancaster University, UK. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Copenhagen Business School, Hanken School of Economics, Jyväskylä University and Lappeenranta University of Technology. He has previously served as the Chair of European Group of Organizational Studies (EGOS) and as representative-at-large of the Board of Governors of the Academy of Management. He is now a board member of the European Institute for Advanced Studies of Management (EIASM) and Scandinavian Consortium of Organizational Research (SCANCOR).
