From Dec 11 to 13, 33 invited speakers deliberated on 15 topics over five plenary sessions; in the 25 conference tracks, 145 papers were presented by around 300 authors and co-authors from both academia and industry

02 January, 2018, Bengaluru: The Data Centre and Analytics Lab (DCAL) of Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) hosted the 5th International Conference on Business Analytics and Intelligence (BAICONF 2017) from December 11 to 13, 2017. The BAI conference is one of the most prestigious meets for academicians and practitioners.

The conference provided a platform for Analytics and Big Data professionals to create and disseminate knowledge in the field of Analytics. It also offered an opportunity to understand applications of Analytics and Big Data in various disciplines of management and how they are being used for solving domain and sector specific problems.

The three-day conference saw participation from more than 500 professionals from over 50 corporate organizations and over 65 Indian and global academic institutions. A total of 33 invited speakers deliberated on 15 topics over five plenary sessions as part of the invited talks. In the 25 conference tracks, 145 papers were presented by close to 300 authors and co-authors from both academia and industry.

Workshops

There were three pre-conference workshops on ‘Machine Learning using R’, ‘Machine Learning using Python’, and ‘Deep Learning’. More than 80 participants attended these workshops.

The topics covered in the invited talks included: Economics in the Age of Big Data, Data Science at VMware, Analytics in Sports, Using Machine Learning Algorithms to Detect Earnings Manipulations, Data Science Practice in Health Domain and Deep Learning, Critical Connections: Optimal Gate Assignment for a Major Metro Airport in India, Text and Sentiment Analysis of BREXIT and Beyond, Using Machine Learning to Manage Health Outcomes and Patient Engagement, Design Patterns for Autonomous Systems, Digital Innovation and Analytics in Agriculture – ICT Solutions, Every Drop Counts – Unleashing the Prospective Locations for Water Harvesting Using Geospatial Analytics, Deep Learning Architectures for Natural Language Processing, Converging Research-Learning-Innovation in Emerging Technology for Building Future Skills, Large Area Analytics, and Every Minute Counts – Intelligent Public Transport System Using Big Data Technologies.

Apart from the invited talks, the conference included a panel discussion on analytics education. The panel had representation from both private training academies and academic institutions. Two cultural performances kept the audience entertained on the conference days.

Awards for best papers

Two best research paper awards and one award for commendable paper were announced. Cash prizes and award certificates were given out by Professor U Dinesh Kumar, Conference Chair and Chairperson of the Data Centre and Analytics Lab (DCAL) of IIMB. The award details are mentioned below.

The conference proceedings were shared with all the delegates as part of the conference kit. The event was a great opportunity for networking, sharing of research ideas and analytics solutions. The three days of intellectual interaction was facilitated by Prof. U Dinesh Kumar, faculty and Chairperson of the Decision Sciences and Information Systems area of IIMB, along with his team at DCAL with support from the entire IIMB community.
