Webinar: Contact Tracing apps – Design, Implementation and Effectiveness on June 03

28 May 2020, Bengaluru: IIMB’s Centre for Software and Information Technology Management (CSITM) will organise a series of webinars on contemporary topics during the year 2020 – 21. Considering the importance of the situation caused by COVID-19, the first in the series will be an interview with legal experts on the Contact Tracking apps – particularly, the Arogya Setu app, to be held on June 03, 2020.

Aarogya Setu app is a digital contact tracing application launched by the Indian Government on April 02, 2020, which runs on Android and Apple smartphones. The app is available in 11 languages – English and 10 Indian languages. Aarogya Setu app is built in the public-private partnership mode with the National Informatics Center (NIC) involved in the development of the app. The app relies on Bluetooth and GPS for tracing contacts who come in proximity to COVID infected persons. It stores the users’ personal data and location information of COVID positive individuals on a central server.

The app has been embroiled in data and privacy debates right from the time of its launch.  Recently researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) who evaluated the app gave it a rating of 1 out of 5 stars.  Many have questioned the legal and constitutional basis in making the use of the app mandatory.

The proposed webinar is an opportunity to interact with the legal experts on the concerns regarding the design, implementation and effectiveness of the app. Prof. Rahul De’, from the Information Systems area at IIMB, will discuss the following concerns with the legal experts:

  • General Information about Aarogya Setu app

  • Privacy-related questions for Aarogya Setu app

  • Effectiveness, mandatory and voluntary use of contact tracing apps

  • Comparison with contact tracing apps in other countries

  • Recommendations

The objective of the webinar is to create awareness among the users and to sensitise students and professionals who are future contributors of similar applications on different dimensions, expectations, shortfalls, and the improvement areas.
