CPP International Conference on Public Policy & Management to kick off with pre-conference lecture on ‘Making Bangalore an Ecologically Smart City’ on 21st August

The Prof. M. R. Krishnamurthy Memorial Lecture to be led by Prof. Harini Nagendra, Director of Azim Premji University Research Center; lecture to set stage for the CPP Conference from 22nd to 24th August

21 August, 2023, Bengaluru: The XVIII International Conference on Public Policy & Management, to be hosted by the Centre for Public Policy (CPP) at IIM Bangalore, will kick off with the pre-conference lecture on ‘Making Bangalore an Ecologically Smart City’, by Prof. Harini Nagendra, Director of the Azim Premji University Research Center, from 5 pm to 6.30 pm on 21st August 2023, at the MDC Conference Hall, IIMB. The Prof. M. R. Krishnamurthy Memorial Lecture will set the stage for the CPP Conference, to be held from 22nd to 24th August 2023. The conference would be ideal for academicians, students, research scholars, policy regulators, auditing and rating agencies, lawyers, NGO professionals and anyone with an interest in public policy. 

Prof. Harini Nagendra also leads Azim Premji University’s Center for Climate Change and Sustainability. Over the past 30 years, Prof. Nagendra has been at the leading edge of research, examining conservation in forests and cities of South Asia from the perspective of both landscape ecology and social justice. For her interdisciplinary research and practice, she has received a number of awards including the 2009 Cozzarelli Prize from the US National Academy of Sciences, the 2013 Elinor Ostrom Senior Scholar award and the 2017 Clarivate Web of Science award. Her publications include the books, ‘Nature in the City: Bengaluru in the Past, Present and Future’ and ‘Cities and Canopies: The Tree Book of Indian Cities’, as well as the forthcoming book, ‘Shades of Blue: Connecting the Drops in India’s Cities’ and over 150 research publications including recent papers in Nature, Nature Sustainability and Science. She writes a monthly column titled: ‘The Green Goblin’ for Deccan Herald, and is a well-known public speaker and writer on issues of urban sustainability in India. She also writes a mystery series set in 1920s Bangalore, ‘The Bangalore Detectives Club’. 

The CPP International Conference on Public Policy & Management is an interdisciplinary conference which draws scholars representing a diversity of perspectives on public policy issues and provides a forum for showcasing the latest developments in policy research and practice. The conference hosts academic sessions, topical policy debates, workshops, panel discussions and practitioner-oriented discussions on contemporary topics on public policy and management.

Suggested themes for the conference include: urban planning, built spaces and architecture in honor of Dr. Balkrishna Doshi, the Chief Architect of the institute; managing safe and inclusive workplaces, gender and caste diversity, role of internal committees on diversity and inclusion, and POSH; role of technology in governance; data and personal privacy in an invasive world; policy approaches to water management (drinking water, water for irrigation and water for industrial use), and health systems – including practice and policy innovations.

Prof. M. R. Krishnamurthy was a textile expert. After completing his B Sc from Central College, Bangalore, he went on to pursue a degree program at Manchester College of Technology. Upon his return to Bangalore, he joined Sri Krishnarajendara Silver Jubilee Technological Institute (SKSJTI), an educational institution which was among the first of its kind to focus on management of the textile industry. His academic career steadily advanced – from lecturer to professor to college principal. Upon retirement, MRK continued to maintain his interest in textile management by providing his expertise to small-scale silk manufacturing firms in the city.
