Walk with nature: Campus Bird Count at IIM Bangalore on February 17

13 February, 2018, Bengaluru: IIM Bangalore has organized a Campus Bird Count on February 17 (Saturday), 2018, as part of the global, volunteer-driven research initiative ‘Great Backyard Bird Count’ (GBBC) conducted every year, during four days in February.

IIMB will be participating in the The World Campus Bird Count, https://birdcount.in/event/cbc2018/ for the second consecutive year.

The event is a coordinated effort to document birdlife in multiple campuses across India. It is aimed to track the changing composition of the bird population in urban centres. Such snapshots of the bird population help address issues like how birds are distributed through the country, how changes in habitat and weather affect them, and if populations and distributions change from year to year.

IIMB student run Environment and Sustainability (ENS) Club will be hosting the event. The bird count will be led by Deepa Mohan, state coordinator for GBBC 2018 (Karnataka).

The protocol of the activity is flexible: the volunteers walk around and collect as many 15-minute ‘complete’ lists as possible. In other words, each 15-minute list should contain all species detected in that time period. Thereafter, volunteers need to upload these lists to eBird, as per the general protocol for GBBC. eBird India is a collaborative project managed by Bird Count India.

Last year 187 campuses from 23 states took part in the CBC, documenting 455 species.

Anyone who wants to participate is welcome. The group will gather at the MDC at 6am and begin the walk thereafter. They will wind up by about 9 am.
