Mangipudi Awards - In celebration of continuous learning

IIMB

Haragopal Mangipudi, PGSEM 2001

Learning is Living – Nothing better summarises the need for continuous learning in the digital era.  IIMB’s PGPEM program has helped nearly fifteen hundred executives over the last two decades prepare themselves for leadership roles in the industry. Haragopal Mangipudi  is one such beneficiary. Visal Mangipudi  and Kartik Mangipudi , children of Mani and Haragopal Mangipudi  have  fond memories of IIMB from their childhood.   Visal, his wife Kaavya  and Kartik instituted the Mangipudi Awards for the Gold Medallist and Best Allrounder from the graduating PGPEM batch every year from 2019 . Visal is an alumnus of  Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Columbia University, NY.  Dr. Kaavya is an alumna of University of California, Los Angeles and  University of California, Irvine - School of Medicine.  Dr. Kartik is an alumnus of University of California, Los Angeles and Royal College of Surgeons.

 Visal Mangipudi, Haragopal Foundation Trustee

“The most poignant thing I remember the first time I visited IIMB was that the campus had an aura, like a place of worship, the moment you entered, it felt separate from rest of the world. Secondly, the biggest takeaway from watching my father get his MBA was, it taught me that education/ learning is a lifelong pursuit and doesn’t end after school. Today that seems obvious, but when I was a kid, it was impactful. “

Kavya Raman, Haragopal Foundation Trustee

“Most memorable conversations I’ve had with my father-in law started with him regaling one of his many memories as a student at IIMB. It is evident that his time here shaped him to be the analytical, eloquent and successful person he is today. His transition from business to academia was effortless due to his passion towards this school and his students, and his seamless ability to edify complex concepts using everyday analogies. This award recognizes demonstrated excellence in all facets needed to become the outstanding leader he exemplifies.”

Kartik Mangipudi, Haragopal Foundation Trustee

“I still recall sitting at the dinner table with my algebra homework in front of me, watching my dad come home after a full day of work, a full evening of lectures, with a stack of books under his arm for a full night of studying. Day after day, my homework changed, but his routine stayed the same. Curious, I asked him why do all of this? His reply was simple: ‘At IIMB, excellent is ordinary and the exceptional is expected.’  This is evident from the moment you step onto the IIMB campus. People from all walks of life coalesce over common traits: an insatiable appetite to learn, the humility to be questioned, and the relentless painstaking drive for self-improvement. The Mangipudi Award is derived from what our father gave us: a motivation to constantly challenge yourself beyond what you think you are capable of.”

Nikhil Pradeep Jalan, PGP 2014

“I have immensely benefitted from the research-based, scientifically curated management education imparted by IIM-B. We must continue expanding our research efforts to further strengthen the management education in the country and share these lessons with as many as possible. Our institute shall be the flag-bearer of taking management lessons to small businesses and entrepreneurs to prepare them for tomorrow’s opportunities and challenges. I hope the institute will continue making great strides in this direction.”

Vivek Sharma, PGP 1989 batch

“I want to make a lasting contribution to IIMB that made me as an individual and professional.”

IIMB

Ganesan, PGP 2014

“I distinctly even remember the dates of my CAT exam, interviews and getting the admission letter. Having done Engineering degree as a compromise (I was keen to do Agriculture and my dad was keen that I become a Doctor and we compromised!), I feel my MBA at IIMB was a game changer to realize more about myself and my strengths. It is more than 25 years and still I can remember the fast track life I led in the campus.

My IIMB journey started with roller coaster ride on multiple courses, project works, case study discussions, “threat” of surprise quizzes from Late Prof Thirunarayana, attendance etc. During the first term, I remember crying alone in my room as to why did I take this step of doing MBA when life was going well. Post the first term and with the help of my classmates who teach you what RG is, I settled into a rhythm. What I learnt from the course mainly is managing the interpersonal relationships in a high performing group. This has helped me tremendously in my career till today.

I got placed in Maruti Suzuki and I continued with my Automobile experience across different companies with Supply Chain being the focus. Just before the dotcom bubble, joined a start-up to revolutionize Third Party Logistics Service providers, Shippers, Warehouse Service Providers with the help of internet based technologies. This took me across three continents and one of the toughest periods in my life trying to sell with a basic demo. Having learnt how a CEO will react from a MBA perspective to practically knocking doors to sell, it made me a grounded human being.

I started my consulting journey joining Accenture in 2008 and led the Supply Chain Management consulting there for nine years. Moved on to lead Global Recruiting for Accenture in HR! Now back in consulting leading the Tech Strategy and Advisory practice. I am proudly associated with Tier-1 MBA campus recruitment from Accenture from 2009 and this has brought me back to IIMB campus every year. I still get the goose bumps when I enter the main building and the memories come back.

From my observation of different batches over the last decade, I see the changing emphasis on individual achievements and grades. The power of 2-year MBA is the connection you can build across three batches of future leaders and also with the wider IIMB alumni community. I am not against going after higher grades; but the goal of learning has to develop one’s ability to develop their Teachable Point of View on any given topic. This requires understanding of the current situation and thinking through the shape of things to come. And from a self-realization perspective, get to know your strengths and challenges. Every project work is an opportunity to know from your friends on what you brought to the table and what aspects of you are helping the project deliverable.

Planned career is a passé! Your career is shaped by the opportunities you get, the decisions you make, the network you build and all of this interspersed with luck and timing. What is in one’s control is building the network, be a giver in the relationships and a continuous hunger to learn. This is what I would suggest to the MBA students.

My game-changing experience of MBA in IIMB and my continued association with IIMB via the placement process (Accenture is one of the top recruiters in IIMB, consistently!) is one of my proud achievements and I wish I can do more for this exquisite relationship I have with IIMB”

Sandeep

Mr. Sandeep Runwal, IIMB Alumni of batch (1991-1993)
“Education I feel is fundamental to development and economic growth. It is a life shaper and every person should have an equal opportunity to succeed in life. However there are many meritorious students who have to opt out of their academic pursuits due to financial constraints. With these thoughts in mind , I volunteered to establish an endowment and award scholarship in the form of financial assistance to the students pursuing IIMB’s PGP.

The scholarship which is entitled as Runwal Education Trust Scholarship has been initiated with the main objective of providing Financial Aid to the deserving students.

Since 2016 when the 1st scholarship was presented to a PGP student , we have made conscious efforts to reach out to those with exceptional economic and educational needs. We have successfully presented the scholarship to 3 students so far since 2016. The scholarship has enabled them to get access to quality education and facilities and moved them closer to their goals.

The heart-warming responses by these students has further firmed up my belief in instituting this scholarship. This is my small way to contribute to my Alma Mater – IIMB. The Rs 1,00,000 /- annual scholarship is very ably managed by the Financial Aid Office of IIMB and given to the PGP student after the completion of the 1st year of the management course.”

Anonymous Alumni Donor - A message from a PGP alumnus who wishes to remain anonymous and is contributing towards IIMB Ubuntu Scholarship,  when asked what motivated him to make the contribution - He said – “It was really very simple: humanity towards others; it’s our belief that we are defined by compassion and kindness towards others. It was our desire to extend a helping hand to make a difference

ICICI SECURITIES

IIMB

Mr. Vijay Chandok MD & CEO, ICICI Securities

“India is young and growing given the strong demographic dividend where more than half of the population is under 25 years and the economy is rising rapidly due to a continual focus on digitilization, policy reforms, technological innovation and digital transformation.  While these advances have made India more competitive in the global landscape the larger challenge is on creation of employment opportunities and jobs for the young population.

India’s start-up ecosystem is looking at the threshold of the next wave of growth by leveraging new technological innovations. According to the NASSCOM report (India Tech Startup Ecosystem – Leading Tech in the 20s), India continues to reinforce its position as the third largest start-up ecosystem across the world, taking the total number of tech start-ups to over 9,000 in the last five years. About ten percent of these start-ups have been Fintech start-ups. Start-ups have also created more than 60,000 direct jobs and about 1.8 lakh indirect employment during 2019.

The growth in the financial intermediation using technology and digital inventions, Fintech has the potential to increase economic growth through greater market participation, new and improved products and services, lowering costs, improving productivity and better experience; thereby it has the potential to usher more competition, innovation and job creation in our economy.

With the immense potential of the Fintech space to be a key element in the creation of jobs and economic growth ICICI Securities has partnered with N S Raghavan Centre of Entrepreneurial Learning (NSRCEL) of the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) which is one of the oldest incubator cells in the country.

The programme will involve a structured end-to-end approach, broadly entailing reaching out to individuals having ideas, screening of applicants, mentoring by academicians and industry experts, and incubating these ventures. IIMB has some of the brightest minds in the country and we are confident that together we will bring to market several winning ideas.

We look forward to a long term mutually rewarding and enriching partnership.”

Mizuho Bank started its business in India with establishment of the Mumbai branch in 1996 and currently has five offices and Mizuho Securities also has a subsidiary, the highest presence among Japanese Financial Group in India.

Collaboration between IIMB and Mizuho started in 2017 with the welcoming of a number of IIMB delegates to Tokyo.  Mizuho had organized a series of workshops about initiatives in Finance Industry and investments from Japan to India with a view of acquainting the students with the industry.

IIMB established an India Japan Study Centre (IJSC) in 2017 for promoting research on strategy and technology used by Japanese companies for contributing to Indo-Japanese collaboration in businesses. We believe IJSC has been and will play an important role to bridge the gap between academy and business of the two countries.

Mizuho with its vast experience and innovative outlook can support IIMB and specifically the IJSC by sharing information and knowledge acquired through research and analysis activities.  IIMB and Mizuho are well placed to collaborate in various areas for promoting Indo-Japan relations which will in the long run help in all spheres of economic activities spanning from traditional large corporates to innovative start-up businesses.”

WIPRO FOUNDATION

Narayan

P.S.Narayan, Global Head -Sustainability and Social Initiatives, Wipro Ltd Managing Trustee - Wipro Foundation

“While Wipro’s association with IIMB goes back several years, our engagement on matters of sustainability and inclusion in higher education began formally in 2015 when we cohosted the first national summit on the overarching theme of ‘Sustainability in Management Education’. Since then it has been a happy journey of expanding and enriching the scope of collaborating and working together. Starting with Wipro’s support for doctoral fellowships in ‘Sustainability and Business’, we have gone on to supporting faculty-led research in the emerging areas of ‘Business and Human Rights’ and ‘Corporate Climate Disclosures’. More recently, Wipro started supporting IIMB’s unique pre-doctoral program that seeks to enhance inclusion of under-represented socially disadvantaged groups in doctoral programs and teaching faculty in B-Schools. Another unique program Wipro has been a happy collaborator in is the Faculty Development Program that seeks to build capacity in B-School faculty across India to develop online MOOCs on similar themes stated above.

I started by calling this a happy journey because it has truly been a coming together of similar minds with congruent values. IIMB has been a pioneer in the real sense of the word in the way it has adopted the emergent ideas underlying the triple bottom line of business and woven it into its own charter and goals of creating responsible future business leaders. In doing so, it has consistently exhibited a reformist zeal that is at once invigorating and exciting to watch. This has strong resonance with Wipro’s own values as embodied in the Spirit of Wipro. These are the values of responsible citizenship, unyielding integrity and respect for every individual which is at the heart of the human rights movement. In an increasingly troubled world that faces multiple challenges of a climate emergency, alarming levels of inequality and inward looking social agendas, it is not just important but imperative that organizations and institutions like Wipro and IIMB come together to co-create a transformation in the young minds of today so that they steer the world of tomorrow in a direction that makes our planet and society a much better place to live in”

MIRAE ASSET FOUNDATION

Ritesh Patel, Director, Mirae Asset Foundation

“It’s my great pleasure to write about Mirae Asset Foundation’s association with IIM Bangalore over the last year and the glorious prospects for collaboration that I foresee.

Mirae Asset Foundation came into existence in 2018, much in line with our parent organization, The Mirae Asset Park Hyeon-joo Foundation in Korea. We are an Indian charitable foundation registered as a Section 8 company primarily working across several areas of educational development in India. When we began charting out a road map to accomplish our vision of providing access to better education and improved quality of learning, we wanted to develop and support educational institutions of excellence and IIM Bangalore being a frontrunner in management education in India, was on top of our go-to list. Through the Mirae Asset Scholarships that we have established at IIM Bangalore, for PGPM and doctorate students, we aim to reward high achievers and develop leadership, provide facilitating opportunities to disadvantages students, so that they can pursue their dreams and participate in the legacy that IIM Bangalore has so wonderfully created in the four decades. I want to take this opportunity to congratulate IIM Bangalore for its tremendous contribution to fostering excellence in management, innovation and entrepreneurship in India over the past several years and wish all the Mirae Asset Scholars a very bright future in taking this rich heritage forward.

I am certain that in the coming years, Mirae Asset Foundation’s partnership with IIM Bangalore will lead to strengthening several streams of educational leadership and excellence in India thereby establishing a rich legacy for future generations.”

Nadathur S Raghavan, Infosys Co-Founder

“Infosys, to me, is a triumph of entrepreneurial spirit spearheaded by a bunch of seven middle class professionals who were willing to push the innovation envelope to its limits. When I was retiring from Infosys in the year 2000, I was looking for an opportunity to set up a centre for fostering early entrepreneurial innovation and learning encompassing research, education & training and incubation. Such a centre would identify budding entrepreneurs, provide platform for learning, provide mentoring support, facilitate funding by specific agencies etc. Apart from research in the area of entrepreneurship in India, it would also conduct a variety of courses, programs and workshops for all stakeholders connected with entrepreneurship. The idea was to create an entrepreneurial ecosystem specifically keeping the Indian context in mind. Nandan Nilekani introduced me to IIM Bangalore who were looking for setting up a centre and Nadathur S Raghavan Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning (NSRCEL) was thus born.”

The family of Prof. M. R. Krishnamurthy wished to commemorate  his life and accomplishments in a manner that was consistent with his interests,  background and values. We explored several  options,  We explored several  options,  and, concluded  that  the best way to do this  was to start an endowment in his name at IIM -B, an institution that he had great respect for. When we approached IIM-B, our initial concept was met with enthusiasm and a genuine willingness to work with us to make the project  succeed.   Prof. Krishnamurthy  spent his entire career teaching  textile technology at the Sri Krishnarajendra Silver Jubilee Technological Institute (SKSJTI) and  retired as Principal of the same institution.  He was born in Bengaluru, and except for a few years spent in pursuing higher studies in Manchester, U.K., lived most of his  life  in Bengaluru.   He loved the city  and everything that the dear city of his time represented - pleasant  weather, vigorous urban energy, and  a focus on the future.  In discussions with staff at IIM-B, we  felt the  importance of highlighting all these elements  in the endowment program. The faculty suggested  a series of lectures by distinguished speakers  who had done extensive research  related to Bengaluru  and the challenges facing the city.  We wholeheartedly agreed, and  look forward to seeing the  project materialize soon.”
