PGP Core Courses

At the Centre of Management Communication (CMC), we believe that effective communication is essential for expressing your thoughts and ideas.

Communication skills are a vital component of strategic business management. The ability to analyse problems, develop creative solutions, and articulate them clearly is undoubtedly one of the most important skill sets for a manager. Our course emphasizes honing these communication skills, which include business writing, speaking, reading, listening, and presentation techniques, while adapting to the evolving landscape of management.

The Centre of Management Communication (CMC) offers an integrated learning experience through its communication courses, which are spread over the first and second terms of the Postgraduate Programme (PGP). The courses include a Preparatory Programme called the Online Module on Communication (OMC), along with "Advances in Business Communication" in Term 1 and "Communication in the Digital Age" in Term 2. Three core courses are provided to PGP students by the CMC.

Program Structure

During the first year of the PGP program, students will participate in the following courses:

  • Online Module on Communication (Term 1)
  • Advances in Business Communication (Term 1)
  • Communication in the Digital Age (Term 2)

Objectives

Our learning objectives for PGP students include:

  • Developing an understanding of the changing nature of business communication.
  • Recognizing the current communication and media landscape, including the functional value of various communication tools.
  • Applying course content to real-world communication challenges faced by organizations.
  • Gaining insights into audience preferences and selecting appropriate communication tools for effective presentations.
  • Identifying the strengths, weaknesses, and barriers of various digital communication channels in a business environment.

At the Centre of Management Communication (CMC), we are dedicated to equipping our students with the skills necessary to thrive in today’s dynamic business world. Our communication courses are designed to provide students with the skills to excel in both traditional and digital communication environments by integrating theoretical knowledge with practical application.

Course Offerings

  • Online Module on Communication (OMC)

The Online Module on Communication (OMC) serves as the foundational course for students, focusing on developing essential communication skills through the Pearson online platform. This module engages students with various assignments, homework, activities, and quizzes, including simulations and writing exercises.

OMC begins three weeks before the start of Term 1. The online simulation-based course provides an overview and real-time simulations of effective communication, preparing students for the classroom learning experience in Advances in Business Communication during Term 1.

  • Advances in Business Communication (ABC)

In the Advances in Business Communication course, we focus on core concepts of business communication and creating actionable messaging for a shifting global business context. Through interactive, practice-led individual and group sessions, students will learn essential skills for communicating with stakeholders through effective, ethical communication and persuasive business storytelling.

We not only teach students to be proficient in business communication but also incorporate real-life scenarios in our in-class activities, making learning more engaging and enjoyable.

  • Communication in the Digital Age (CDA)

In the Communication in the Digital Age course, we ensure that students learn to apply these concepts to solve communication challenges faced by actual organizations. This course helps students understand how to select the best message structure and delivery for different digital communication channels. In today’s technology-driven and digitalized world, it is crucial for students to know how to navigate digital environments.

In Communication in the Digital Age, we focus on enhancing writing skills, such as persuading through technological communication, collaborating on business writing across global teams, fostering teamwork through effective communication, and establishing accountability and credibility with stakeholders, all through group activities and projects.
