Career diplomat and IIMB alumnus N Ravi joins the Centre for Public Policy
N Ravi, PGP '82 has joined the Centre for Public Policy (CPP) at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) as Senior Fellow in November 2010. A seasoned bureaucrat, he brings with him years of experience gained in the Indian Foreign Service. In this new assignment, he is well-positioned to contribute to the national and international public policy assignments handled by the CPP. The association also demonstrates the ability of the CPP to involve highly-experienced professionals in real policy-making.
N Ravi retired from the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) in December 2009 after working for nearly 37 years in different positions in India and abroad. His last assignment was Secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs looking after the conduct of all aspects of bilateral relations with as many as 60 countries in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, East Asia, South East Asia, Australasia, the Gulf, West Asia and North Africa. He was also in charge of Economic Relations of India with all countries of the world, particularly through multilateral and regional organizations of which India is a member. These included ASEM, ASEAN, ARF, BIMSTEC, EAS, GCC and SAARC.
While working in India at different times, his assignments have covered political, economic and trade/commerce functions, in the Ministries of External Affairs, Finance and Commerce. His postings abroad have been in Belgrade, Tokyo (two postings), Thimphu (Bhutan), Moscow, Munich and an ambassadorial stint in Hanoi (Vietnam). Exposure to economic and commercial work has formed a significant part of his career.
In the Ministry of Commerce, as in-charge of the West Asia & North Africa Division looking after India's economic and commercial relations with Iran, the countries of the Persian Gulf, the Middle East and North Africa, N Ravi gained deep insights into the oil industry in the Gulf. As in-charge of the Commodity Divisions dealing with Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals, Leather and Sports Goods & Toys, he dealt with cases related to anti-dumping. Further, as Member Secretary of the Export Promotion Board, chaired by the Cabinet Secretary, he acquired comprehensive understanding about India's foreign trade. As Director in the Foreign Trade Division, in the Ministry of Finance, N Ravi was involved in issues related to India's acceptance and offer of technical and economic assistance globally.
After retirement from government service, N Ravi is now engaged in academics and training in the field of international management. An alumnus of IIMB, he completed the Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) and graduated in 1982 receiving the Chairman's Gold Medal for Best All-Round Performance. In October 2009, N Ravi was honoured by IIMB with the Distinguished Alumnus Award.
