26 May, 2025, Bengaluru: The paper ‘Technology-Enabled Agent Choice and Uptake of Social Assistance Programs: Evidence from India’s Food Security Program’, co-authored by IIMB faculty Prof. Maya Ganesh, Production and Operations Management area; Prof. Sarang Deo and Prof. Sripad Devalkar of ISB; and Rakesh Allu, PhD scholar, Cornell University, has been awarded the 2025 Ralph Gomory Best Industry Studies Paper Award.

The recognition is conferred annually on the most impactful research article nominated by editorial teams from ten leading journals. The list of journals recruited is as follows: Industrial and Corporate Change (ICC), Industrial and Labor Relations Review (ILRR), Journal of International Business Studies (JIBS), Journal of Operations Management (JOM), Manufacturing and Service Operations Management (MSOM), Organization Science (OS), Production & Operations Management (POM), Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal (SEJ), Strategic Management Journal (SMJ), and Strategy Science (SS).

Published in Manufacturing & Service Operations Management, the paper, with critical insights for public-sector program design, examines how introducing agent choice in India’s Public Distribution System affects beneficiary participation. Using a reverse difference-in-differences framework on data from food security programs across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, the study finds that enabling agent choice increased entitlement uptake by 6.6%, with significantly stronger effects in areas with higher agent density.
