Win! Win! Win!

Celebrated triathlon athlete, academician and entrepreneur Dr Anu Vaidyanathan juggles many roles with aplomb

The EPGP Seminar Series provides a platform for students of IIMB's one year, full time residential Executive Post Graduate Programme in Management to engage with eminent personalities from diverse fields such as the liberal arts, NGOs, sports, and media.

Prof. Pankaj Chandra, Director, IIMB, says: "The EPGP Seminar Series showcases cutting-edge technologies in Science, Social Science, Art, Music and more. The aim is to appreciate management in analytics as much as in social sciences or humanities."

The intent of the series is to create opportunities for students to gain insights into fields as diverse as aesthetics, nano-technology and history.

Prof. G Shainesh, Chairperson, EPGP, says: "The presence of well-known scientists, journalists, authors, and professors augments the vibrant campus culture at IIM Bangalore. The EPGP Seminar Series facilitates the exchange of a broad range of ideas and perspectives from both inside and outside the world of management and provides a fertile ground for holistic leadership development."

This year, the EPGP Seminar Series had speakers such as Prof. Apoorvanand, Professor in Hindi, Delhi University, who spoke on Democracy & Literature on 17 April; Dr Alaka Deshpande, Consultant Physician, Heal Positive Clinic, on A thought-provoking session on lifestyle disorders, on 03 July; Ms Shubha Ramachandran, Water Sustainability Consultant, BIOME Environmental Solutions, who spoke on The Big Bangalore Water Problem- Exploring Solutions on 01 May.

On 08 August, 2013 Dr Anu Vaidyanathan - an award-winning endurance athlete who has represented India in long-course triathlon - was EPGP's special guest.

Anu, as she prefers to be addressed by students, holds the record of being the only Asian woman to compete in an Ultraman Triathlon in Canada. Drawing inspiration and discipline from sport, Anu completed her PhD in Electrical Engineering at UC Canterbury and being the fierce competitor she is - on field and off it, she even set a university record by completing her course in just 26 months!

After a short stint with IBM, she set up PatNMarks, an Intellectual Property Consulting firm with offices in Austin (USA), Bangalore and Chennai.

This super achiever says she is inspired by "Indian women who carve out a few precious minutes from their packed, chore-driven routine to jog at 5 am".

Juggling multiple roles - triathlon athlete, entrepreneur and academician - is par for the course for Anu. She credits endurance running for making her the person she is. "Running offers me solitude; it provides me with space to introspect and it makes me push my limits," she says.

Anu endorses the 'Early to bed, early to rise' philosophy and impresses on students the need to eat right and rest right. "I usually aim for 2-3 sessions of cycling, swimming and running every week and I eat balanced meals which are mostly home-cooked," she says.

On the challenges that women athletes in endurance sports face, she lists 'perception' at the main issue. "There has to be more social acceptance for women participating in such sports," she declares.

Dr Anu Vaidyanthan will handle 10 sessions of 'Technology and IP' for EPGP students at IIM Bangalore.
