Mizuho India Japan Study Centre at IIMB hosts webinar on ‘Geography of Happiness: Perspectives Across Nations’ on 25th August

Ruut Veenhoven

The session was led by Dr. Ruut Veenhoven, Emeritus Professor of Social Conditions for Human Happiness at Erasmus University, Rotterdam in the Netherlands, and Special Professor at North-West University in South Africa

25 August 2022: The Mizuho India Japan Study Centre (MIJSC) at IIM Bangalore hosted Dr. Ruut Veenhoven, Emeritus Professor of Social Conditions for Human Happiness at Erasmus University, Rotterdam in the Netherlands, and Special Professor at North-West University in South Africa, during the latest session of the Centre’s flagship lecture series ‘Tatsujin-Speak’, that is, ‘Expert-Speak’, on 25th August 2022. The webinar was titled, ‘Geography of Happiness: Perspectives Across Nations’.

In the hour-long virtual session, Dr. Veenhoven explained that happiness was a quality of life and through a model of external and internal dimensions, defined happiness as satisfaction with the outcomes in the context of internal dimension. Similarly, through another model, he explained the difference between passing and enduring happiness. He said that there are measurements of happiness on two dimensions – “how happy people are across the globe and the correlations between factors leading to happiness”.

He concluded by saying that governmental policies that lead to stability seem to indicate greater happiness for a greater number. “On the personal front, the importance of informed choice is the main driver for individual happiness.”
