With his Energy Swaraj bus, he also demonstrates practical ways of mitigating climate change

31 JANUARY, 2023: IIMB hosted a talk on ‘Climate Change & Energy Swaraj’, by Prof Chetan Solanki, India’s leading solar energy researcher and climate change activist, on 31st January from 6 pm to 7:30pm, in Classroom N-101, on campus.

The talk is a part of the elective course offered by Prof. Haritha Saranga, faculty in the Production and Operations Management area and Chairperson of the Sustainability Task Force at IIM Bangalore.

Prof. Chetan Solanki is on  an 11-year pan-India Energy Swaraj yatra. He lives in his Energy Swaraj bus. There was a demonstration of the bus after the talk.

Energy is everything and everything is energy. Gandhiji said, “The earth has enough for everybody’s need but not for anybody’s greed,” but economies always try to produce more and consume more. This growth, fueled by fossil energy, is causing climate change, which threatens the sustainability of life on the planet. Therefore drastic and immediate actions are required by each individual and institution to mitigate climate change,” says Prof. Solanki.

The solution, he says, lies in adopting Energy Swaraj, or generating and consuming energy locally. “Adopting Energy Swaraj will also help in skill development, livelihood creation, energy independence, local economy strengthening, and of course, climate change mitigation.”

The talk covered the philosophical, technical, economic, social and environmental aspects of energy and climate change, along with a demonstration of the Energy Swaraj bus. The talk also offered practical pointers on how each individual can do their bit to mitigate climate change.
