PGPEM 2019-21 at IIMB gets off to a start on April 06 with 76 participants

06 APRIL, 2019: ‘Ugadi’ (New Year) dawned with much promise for 76 managers who listened, nervously at times and eagerly for most part, to what they had signed up for at the inauguration of the two-year Post Graduate Programme in Enterprise Management (PGPEM) at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) on April 06, 2019 as the Deans of the school, the Chair of Admissions, the Chair of the Program and prominent alumni of the program welcomed them.

While the announcement that IIMB now awards an MBA, as opposed to a diploma, to those who complete the PGPEM was met with cheers and applause, the caveat that they would have to work that much harder to earn the required credits for the MBA was met with nervous laughter. “Forget work-life balance while you are here; that’s just for our marketing videos,” quipped Prof. Seema Gupta, Chair, PGPEM. On a more serious note, she described how the program challenges students to “think, feel and act”.

Urging them to learn, analyze, challenge and apply their classroom learning in real-life business scenarios, she also encouraged them to spend time with their peers from other programs at IIMB and leverage the vibrant ecosystem, be it in the form of meeting and listening to entrepreneurs, CXOs, and policy makers at seminars, workshops and conferences that the school regularly hosts.

The PGPEM is a weekend business management programme at IIMB, designed for working mid-level and senior executives with a minimum of four years of work experience after graduation.

Drawing attention to the addition of a new component – an action-oriented project where the PGPEM participant gets to work on a business challenge of his/ her company in project mode and earn credits for it, Prof. Gupta said this would not only help students gain visibility but would also help them give back to the company that gave them the opportunity to pursue their MBA at IIMB.

In his talk as chief guest of the day, Harish Arora, Vice President, NetApp, and alumnus of the PGPEM, spoke of the power of the program and the power of networks built at IIMB which, he said, helped him along his career.

An IT veteran with over 20 years of experience in system-level software product development and engineering management, Harish has a proven track record of building products to meet global customer needs and encouraging a disciplined approach towards execution.

“At IIMB, I learnt about how a company is managed. I studied Strategy, Finance, Marketing, Operations from world-class faculty. I also learnt to be an entrepreneur. You can do that outside of your company or be an intra-preneur inside your company. The program allows you to apply the learnings to your work, and it helps you grow,” he explained.

The Dean of Academic Programmes at IIMB, Prof. Abhoy K Ojha, offered a comprehensive overview of the expectations from students of the program. “Lose the customer approach, and adopt the student approach,” he advised, emphasizing that the program called for high levels of commitment and the school, for high standards of behaviour.

Dean Faculty Prof. Gopal Naik gave an overview of IIMB’s global rankings and partnerships with international networks such as the Global Network of Advanced Management.

Welcoming the students to the program and the school, Chair of Admissions Prof. G. Sabarinathan described the PGPEM as a program that helps tech-qualified managers grow into business leaders.

Offering the profile of the cohort of 2019-21, he urged the students to leverage the diversity in the batch and learn from each other.
