One-year apprenticeship program for pre-doc scholars at IIMB sees 7 students earn certification

28 March, 2019: With a focus on inclusion, IIM Bangalore launched the N. S. Ramaswamy Pre-doctoral Fellowship programme in June 2018, named after its Founding Director Professor N.S. Ramaswamy.

It is a flexible one-year apprenticeship programme designed to help selected pre-doctoral fellows successfully apply to doctoral programmes in management and allied disciplines. The programme specifically targets applicants underrepresented in management academia in India and aims to increase social diversity in this domain.

The first batch of seven students, a group with five males and two female participants, have completed the NSR Pre-doctoral program this year. They received their certificates from the Director of IIMB, Prof. G. Raghuram, on March 27, 2019.

“The aim of this one of a kind program in India is to enlarge the applicant pool from currently underrepresented groups, for doctoral programs in management and subsequently faculty in management. All seven students in the first batch are in the process of applying for doctoral programs in India and abroad. We wish them success and hope to see them as faculty colleagues at IIMB and other management schools in India in the future,” said Prof. Rajluxmi V. Murthy, Chair, Office of Inclusion at IIM Bangalore.

The group of seven students, of the first batch of the program, consists of very talented and committed participants. Most of them have work experience in different sectors and in diverse profiles, including Principal Researcher, Data Entry Operator, Implementation Executive, Business Development Manager, etc., in organizations such as Dalit Enterprise, Victory eServices Private Limited, Chippersage Education Pvt Ltd, and MedRec Technologies.

Pankaj Anand completed the course in the area of Entrepreneurship. He has an MA from Dr. B. R. Ambedkar University, Delhi.

Shivani Kushwaha’s area was Economics & Social Sciences. She has an MA from Madras School of Economics.

Pandiyarajan P, whose area in the course was Marketing, has an MBA from Pondicherry University.

Maloth Ramkumar completed the course in the area of Public Policy & Public Systems. He has an MA from Azim Premji University, Bengaluru.

Muhammed Sadiq T’s area was Information Systems. He has a Master of Library and Information Science from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai.

Mrutyunjaya Sahoo had Finance & Accounting as the area of study. He has a Master of Commerce qualification from Pondicherry University.

Ekta Tembhekar’s area of study was Organizational Behavior and Human Resources Management. She has an MBA from Indian Institute of Management Indore.

Sharing her takeaways from the programme, Pre-doctoral Fellow Shivani Kushwaha said: “My journey during the pre-doctoral programme at IIMB was enriching in every sense. It has taught me how education liberates. The FPM coursework I took has made me understand and appreciate economics in a much better way. The coursework has enhanced my learning experience and has brought about a steep change in my learning graph. IIMB provides the chance to every student to grow in all aspects of life.”

Acknowledging the mentoring she received from the faculty, she said that the professors at IIMB are very knowledgeable and humble, which makes the students very confident and motivated. “My greatest takeaway from the programme is research exposure. My year at IIM Bangalore was an excellent and life-changing experience, and being part of this prestigious institute has enhanced my overall personality. It has made me a better learner, a better researcher and undoubtedly a better person. I also value the friends that I have made during the year.”

“The NSR Pre-Doc program is a very good platform for people who are from a rural background with the medium of study other than English at school level, and a dream to pursue doctoral studies in premier institutes.  I have received guidance from professors at IIMB who have done their doctoral programs from various countries and doctoral scholars at IIMB who have motivated me to take examinations such as GRE and NET. I am proud to be part of the first batch of this program,” said Pandiyarajan P.
