Prof. Arpit Shah awarded funding from Evidence in Governance and Politics (EGAP) to extend dissertation research on urban green spaces

Prof. Shah’s proposal was one of the two successful ‘climate justice’ proposals from 75 proposals that the program attracted

18 November, 2021, Bengaluru: Prof. Arpit Shah, faculty from the Public Policy area and IIMB Young Faculty Research Chair, has been awarded funding from Evidence in Governance and Politics (EGAP), to extend his dissertation research on urban green spaces. His was one of the two successful ‘climate justice’ proposals from 75 proposals that the program attracted.

The priority themes for the proposals were: urban violence and policing; climate justice, and polarization and democracy. The ‘climate justice’ research area focuses on policy responses to climate change and addressing inequalities across people and communities who bear the brunt of its negative impact. Prof. Shah’s work will focus on examining environmental injustice in urban India.

The funding will be used to support research-related expenses, including data purchase and storage, and spending on research assistance.

Evidence in Governance and Politics (EGAP) is a research, evaluation and learning network with worldwide reach that promotes rigorous knowledge accumulation, innovation, and evidence-based policy in various governance domains, including accountability, political participation, mitigation of societal conflict, and reducing inequality. It does so by fostering academic-practitioner collaborations, developing tools and methods for analytical rigor, and training academics and practitioners alike. EGAP operates as a research initiative out of the Institute for Governmental Studies at the University of Berkeley. These grants are supported through funding from The Hewlett Foundation.

Prof. Arpit Shah earned his PhD and PGDM from IIM Ahmedabad and completed his BE (Hons) degree from BITS Pilani - Goa Campus. Prior to his PhD, he worked as a Strategy Consultant with the Monitor Group for four years, including spending significant time with its social sector practice. His research interests are in the areas of climate policy, urban sustainability and sustainable transport. Dr. Shah employs both quantitative and qualitative methods in his research, including the use of spatial data analysis.

Dr. Shah was the recipient of the Tirath Gupta Memorial Award for Best Thesis at IIMA, the Chaudhary Padmanabham Scholarship for academic achievement at IIMA and the BITS Merit Scholarship for academic achievement (awarded six out of eight semesters).
