Paper by doctoral scholar Romana Gulshani and Prof. Vasanthi Srinivasan wins Best Paper Award under Human Resources track at IIM Trichy-hosted Sixth Biennial Indian Academy of Management Conference 2020

07 January, 2020, Bengaluru: A paper titled, ‘Human resource management in small and medium enterprises: Review, critique and suggested research directions’, co-authored by Professor Vasanthi Srinivasan, IIM Bangalore faculty from the Organizational Behavior & Human Resources Management (OBHRM) area, and Romana Gulshani, doctoral scholar (final year) of the OBHRM area at IIMB, has won the Best Paper Award under the Healthcare Management track, at the Sixth Biennial Indian Academy of Management (INDAM) Conference 2020, conducted by IIM Tiruchirappalli, from January 02 to 04, 2020.

This year, the conference had received the highest number of submissions under the Human Resources track.

Romana’s thesis work is focused on understanding the role of venture capitalists in the formalization of HRM in start-ups.

The paper presents a critical review of the literature in Human Resource Management (HRM) in small and medium enterprises (SME). It consists of 97 peer-reviewed articles from ABS-listed journals. The goal of the review is to develop novel research questions and theory by critically reviewing literature in the domain of HRM in SMEs. The review reports that HRM-SME research is limited in terms of theory and fails to adequately capture the complexity associated with emerging organizations. The review first presents previous work done in this field of research and subsequently raises important theoretical, methodological and content issues. It also offers specific suggestions to enable future research development in the field.

At IIM Bangalore, Prof. Vasanthi Srinivasan teaches the core course on Managing People and Performance in Organizations and offers an elective in Human Resources Management. Her research interests are in the fields of women in management and boards, ethics teaching in business schools, and HRM in SMEs.
