‘One Life in Academics’: Special Lecture by Prof. Rahul Dé
With over two decades of dedicated service, his farewell lecture served as an important and heartfelt reminder of his deep impact as an educator at IIM Bangalore
1 January, 2025, Bengaluru: Warm reminiscences from his faculty colleagues, gratitude from his PhD students, a ‘bidai geet’ (farewell song) and resounding applause for his distinguished career as a teacher, researcher and administrator marked the farewell of Professor Rahul Dé, former Dean Programmes and faculty in the Information Systems area at IIM Bangalore, who retired on 31 December 2024.
A beloved member of the IIMB community since 2002, Prof. Dé has made significant contributions to research, practice and mentorship in areas including AI Ethics, e-Government systems, Open Source, Digital Payments, and more. He was also the Hewlett-Packard’s Chair in ICT for Sustainable Economic Development from 2004-18.
He retired after over two decades of dedicated service, with the lecture serving as an important and heartfelt reminder of his deep impact as an educator at IIM Bangalore.
In his special lecture – a cherished tradition at IIM Bangalore, titled ‘One Life in Academics’, Prof. Dé not only walked us down memory lane, showing us glimpses of a pothole-free and pollution-free city that he came to 22 years ago, he also gave attendees plenty to reflect upon when he spoke of what makes IIM Bangalore a truly nourishing space for teachers and researchers.
Having published over 120 papers and several textbooks, Prof. Dé is a respected figure on Open Source and Artificial Intelligence in global academic circles. But he wears his fame lightly. When prodded on what makes him so prolific, he responded that it is the discipline of reading, regularly and extensively, and making notes diligently that sets a good researcher apart from the rest. He also spoke with quiet pride on how management research from India now commands global attention.
PhD students that were under his guidance paid tribute to his readiness to lend them a willing ear and offer thoughtful advice; his faculty colleagues spoke warmly of his quiet humor and ever-helpful nature; his staff colleagues spoke of his ability to bring teams along and ensure everyone had a voice that was heard. Yet, every time compliments came his way, he, true to his trademark style, paid them back, saying he was honored and humbled to belong to a supportive and stellar community that has, over the years, become family to him.
