Centre for Public Policy at IIMB hosts seminar on ‘Reservation 2.0’ on July 31 at IIMB

The Centre for Public Policy at IIM Bangalore will host a seminar by Prof. Ashwini Deshpande on July 31st, at 6 pm, in Classroom N001, on Reservation 2.0: Is Caste Still an Indicator of Backwardness?

Prof. Deshpande is with the Economics Department, Ashoka University. For more details on her, see

https://www.ashoka.edu.in/welcome/faculty#!/ashwini-deshpande-259

Abstract: The 10% quota for the economically weaker sections (EWS) completely overturns the original logic of reservations on its head, while misconstruing the EWS category itself. The researchers examine data from the India Human Development Survey to assess if caste remains a critical marker of disadvantage, and find that caste divisions are relevant, even amongst the “poor”.

The talk will also address some conundrums associated with reconciling the long-term goal of eliminating caste-based distinctions and advocating caste-based affirmative action.
