IIM Bangalore welcomes Batch 2 to the Professional Certificate Programme in Hospital Management on Doctor’s Day

Mr Dinesh Gundu Rao, Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Government of Karnataka, inaugurates programme and says State Govt will enrol senior healthcare professionals to the programme; Dr Devi Shetty, Chairman, Board of IIMB, highlights the relevance of management education for healthcare professionals

01 July, 2023, Bengaluru: Indian Institute of Management Bangalore welcomed participants to Batch 2 of the Professional Certificate Programme in Hospital Management today, with a programme inaugurated by Mr Dinesh Gundu Rao, Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Government of Karnataka, Dr Devi Shetty, Founder-Chairman, Narayana Healthcare, and Chairperson, Board of Governors, IIMB, and Professor Rishikesha T Krishnan, Director, IIM Bangalore, this morning.

The programme is delivered by IIMBx, the digital learning initiative of IIMB, which strives to create positive social impact by leveraging educational technology to create a world-class repository of digital courseware in management for learners across the globe.

Welcoming the gathering, Prof. Vasanthi Srinivasan, Chairperson, IIMBx, deemed it a privilege to launch cohort 2 of the programme on Doctor’s Day.  She also offered an overview of the journey of IIMBx from 2014 onwards, highlighting its programs for diverse groups of learners, including corporate leaders, bureaucrats and healthcare professionals.

IIMB Director Prof. Rishikesha T Krishnan said the Professional Certificate Programme in Hospital Management has been made accessible to busy professionals. “We are fortunate to have Dr Devi Shetty guide us in designing the programme,” he said. Welcoming Mr Dinesh Gundu Rao to IIMB, he said the Institute looked forward to the support of the State Government to expand the scope of the programme. Prof. RT Krishnan also announced free enrolment to the programme to a select number of doctors in government service. “We urge the government to identify the best doctors for this programme,” he added.

Chief Guest’s address

Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao thanked all healthcare professionals for their contribution to nation-building. He congratulated IIMB for designing and delivering a programme in Hospital Management and encouraged learners to take advantage of such a programme. “The government’s goal is to provide accessible and affordable healthcare to all. IIMB’s Hospital Management programme will help us achieve this goal. I commit to sending our senior doctors and healthcare professionals to this programme and we will pay their fees! A programme like this will help us shape our State’s future. Hospitals are not just about processes and technology but about people. They should be inclusive, responsive and affordable spaces. They should be places of compassion,” he said.

Dr Devi Shetty’s address

In his address, Dr Devi Shetty, said the programme is for all professionals in the healthcare industry, especially doctors. “The healthcare industry is going through massive change. Be prepared for change and equip yourself for it with a program like this. Read the book, ‘Who Moved My Cheese’ as it prepares you to embrace change.” To make his point, he talked about a poster he had in his room when he was a medical student in KMC Mangalore. “That poster had a worried monkey saying, ‘Just when I thought I had all the answers to life’s questions, someone changed the question paper’. Let’s not have the same dilemma,” he said.

Earlier in the day, doctors shared their experiences on patient care in remote areas of the country and the needs in these areas. They also talked about life lessons learned in these areas. Participants from the first cohort of the programme were also present at the inauguration and talked about their takeaways from the programme. The IIMBx team showed how the feedback from Batch 1 has been incorporated in the programme, this year.

About the program:

The Professional Certificate in Hospital Management of IIM Bangalore is a well-crafted 12-month online programme which aims to equip professionals working in the healthcare industry with various leadership competencies such as managing people, innovations, organization design and developing strategies. Moreover, it emphasizes on building managerial expertise in diverse areas such as Operations, Marketing, Finance, Economics as well as an understanding on the regulatory framework of healthcare in India. This programme helps learners design and deliver high-impact services within their respective roles. Combining case studies, expert faculty and industry, is what makes this programme a unique learning experience.

The programme focuses on industry-relevant content, expert talks and other valuable instructional methods. It is ideal for healthcare professionals – be it doctors, para-medical staff, hospital administrators, nurses, etc., who are interested in learning more about management and its relevance in hospital settings.

Hospital management is an important aspect of healthcare that deals with the planning, organization and coordination of healthcare services. It is a complex field that requires a deep understanding of healthcare policies, patient care and financial management. To cater to this growing need and bring management education to the context of healthcare, IIM Bangalore launched the 12-month online certificate programme in July 2022 and the first cohort is close to successful completion of the programme.
