“Innovate in the tough times, reap rewards in normalcy”, says industry chief at EPGP seminar

14 AUGUST, 2020: “When the winds of change blow, some build walls, others build windmills. Companies, despite the difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, need to pick product and market opportunity carefully. They need to realign their innovation strategy to meet their future goals,” observed T.S. Kathayat, President and Chief Technical Officer, Welspun Corp, in his address to the students of the Executive Post Graduate Programme in Management (EPGP) at IIM Bangalore, today.

His talk, which was part of the EPGP Seminar Series, emphasized the importance of corporate and leadership agility and resilience in the face of the pandemic. “This generation of leaders can become high achieving, humane, purposeful and connected future leaders as the new normal requires people and companies to be more collaborative than competitive, and think of the greater good,” he said.

Explaining how companies that invested in innovation during earlier crises were able to outperform ones that did not, he said young managers need to be prepared to learn the ropes far quicker than managers in the past and be willing to realign their thought processes. “Unlike pre-pandemic managers, managers going forward would need to prioritize the short and medium term to ensure stability before focusing on the long term,” he said, summarizing Future Leadership Qualities in the following mathematical equation:

Future Leadership Quality = V + I*T2 + 3C + H + R

where

V = Vision

I = Integrity

T2 = Transparency and Trust

3C = Commitment, Confidence, Courage

H = Humanity

R = Respect
