5 September, 2022, Bengaluru: The Mizuho India Japan Study Centre (MIJSC) at IIM Bangalore hosted Prof. Nobuyuki Ozaki, Innovation Strategy Office, Nagoya University and Senior Fellow at Toshiba Corporation, during the latest session of the centre’s flagship lecture series ‘Tatsujin-Speak’, that is, ‘Expert-Speak’, on 2nd September 2022 (Friday). The webinar was titled, ‘Intelligent Transportation Systems in Japan – Past & Current Situation’.

During the hour-long virtual session, Prof. Ozaki spoke about the evolution of Intelligent Transport Systems, the current situation of research and implementation in Japan, and created scenarios of the future in this exciting field of study.

Prof. Ozaki explained that although the traffic volumes have increased, by a factor of three over the past five decades, both the congestion as well as the carbon emissions have shown a reducing trend in Japan, mainly due to intelligent traffic management. “The vision of the Japanese Government is to create safe and comfortable mobility options, increase logistic efficiency, improve mobility energy optimization, and develop multimodal seamless mobility”, he added.

Prof. Ozaki also listed the three trends which are likely to drive changes in this field, namely, increasing urbanization, rapidity of aging in societies and focussed approach towards environmental sustenance.  “All approaches, whether technical or societal, would be driven by a vision to improve transport enabling human ties”, he pointed out.

About the speaker: Nobuyuki Ozaki is a Professor at Nagoya University Japan at the Strategic Innovation Centre and works for the Global Research Institute for Mobility in Society. His research is on application of Computer Vision Technology to the broad field of Urban Mobility Services or ITS, as it is popularly known as. He has applied algorithms of computer vision/image recognition for low power dissipation processor architecture. He has worked in industry for many decades before becoming an academician. During his tenure in Toshiba Corporation, he worked on ITS projects across the globe in countries such as Australia, Germany and USA. He is also actively involved with many industry and academic bodies, including ITS Japan and IEEE.
