Centre for Software & IT Management to hold research seminar titled ‘Encouraging Eco-driving with Post-trip Visualized Storytelling: An Experiment Combining Eye-tracking and a Driving Simulator’ on 7th March

Session to be led by Prof. Ben Choi, Faculty at the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

23 February, 2023, Bengaluru: The Centre for Software and Information Technology Management (CSITM) at IIM Bangalore will conduct an Information Systems research seminar titled, ‘Encouraging Eco-driving with Post-trip Visualized Storytelling: An Experiment Combining Eye-tracking and a Driving Simulator’, on 7th March 2023 (Tuesday), from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm, at Classroom K22. The session will be led by Prof. Ben Choi, Faculty at the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. CSTIM will hold the seminar as part of its initiative to promote dissemination and application of knowledge for the benefit of academics and professionals from the industry.

Abstract: Visualized storytelling has been broadly employed to help individuals understand complex environmental issues, increase green awareness and encourage sustainable behavior. However, sustainability awareness does not always transpire to actual green practices. In this study, the researchers develop and test a model that explains how eco-driving behavior can be promoted with post-trip visualized storytelling. Drawing on the human-computer interaction literature, the researchers consider the impact of post-trip visualizations on eco-driving behavior. They further integrate the moral norm perspective to reveal individuals’ awareness of consequences and feelings of responsibility after viewing visualized narratives. The researchers also test their hypotheses in an experiment involving eye-tracking and driving simulation. Results show that animated illustration and prospective narratives elevated eco-driving behavior. In addition, awareness of consequences and feelings of responsibility were shown to be important mediators.

Overall, this study contributes to Information Systems literature by unravelling the effects of post-trip visualized storytelling on eco-driving behavior. This will be of interest to academics and professionals from all walks of industry.

Speaker details: Dr. Ben Choi is an Assistant Professor in Information Technology and Operations Management at the Nanyang Technological University. Previously, he was faculty at the University of New South Wales. He received his B Sci and PhD in Information Systems from the National University of Singapore. He has been named the Reviewer of the Year at the Journal of the Association for Information Systems (2020) and MIS Quarterly (2016). He has published multiple papers in premier Information Systems journals including Information Systems Research, Journal of Management Information Systems, and Journal of the Association for Information Systems

His research interests focus on human-computer/robotic interactions, data visualizations, sustainability, and information privacy using various methods (that is, lab/field experiments, surveys, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and physiological measurements such as computer vision, GSR, and eye-tracking).
