India’s leading business groups come together for a programme on Sustainability and Communication as COP28 begins

1 December, 2023, Bengaluru: As the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP28) gets under way in Dubai, the Office of Executive Education Programmes at IIM Bangalore organized a programme titled, ‘Growth through Sustainability.’

Around 45 business leaders from across sectors like energy, transport, automobile, electronics, insurance, aviation, real estate and manufacturing, are attending this two-day Executive Programme focusing on how to continue to grow, and remain at the top, in terms of business strategies for Sustainability.

The Custom Programme is designed and delivered by Programme Director Dr Deepti Ganapathy, Chairperson and faculty, Centre for Management Communication, IIM Bangalore, and Prerna Wadikar, Adjunct Professor, IIT Gandhinagar and IIM Bangalore. The programme will help the senior management of the country’s leading business houses to think critically and engage in deliberations to tackle the most pressing situation of this century.

“Demonstrating Climate Leadership through Climate Action has been at the forefront of this programme’s design and curriculum. We have offered this programme thrice this year and are confident that the participants, after completing this course, are going to make a visible difference,” says Dr Ganapathy, whose book: Media and Climate Change: Making Sense of Press Narratives is part of the course material.

"Insurers influence behavior through underwriting choices, incentivizing responsible practices, and encouraging investments in sustainable initiatives, playing a pivotal role in risk assessment, mitigation, and hence ESG," asserts Prerna Wadikar.

During this course, participants will be given a foundational understanding of the objective of ESG requirements by investors, regulators and value chain partners. They would explore ways to integrate sustainability, social considerations, governance in business decisions, while gaining actionable strategies for ESG integration, as well as learn to assess ESG risks and convert that to business and strategic advantage.

They will also delve into understanding and managing the media’s perception, while inferring the pressure mounting with frequent IPCC reports and newer regulations, devising a communication plan to lay out a roadmap for managing impact on environment. Building climate adaptation and resilience through concrete action for sustained growth in business, is the outcome that participants will gain insights into.

Shikhar Jain, Deputy Head, CII-ITC Centre for Excellence in Sustainable Development, who is currently at the COP28 Summit in UAE, joined virtually and gave the participants a sense of the business negotiations and climate currently underway in COP28.
