Professor Chirantan Chatterjee is part of ‘India & Innovation’ panel hosted by University of Pennsylvania

Professor Chirantan Chatterjee, Young Faculty Research Chair & Assistant Professor at the Indian Institute Management Bangalore (IIMB), was invited as a panelist at the University of Pennsylvania and Penn Global 'India & Innovation' bi-coastal conference from November 14-15, 2013 at the University of Pennsylvania.

The conference, 'India as a Pioneer of Innovation: Constraints and Opportunities', aimed to assess the present and future of innovation in India, especially in business, law, public services, and urban planning.

The conference hosted academic experts with global business and government leaders to advance understanding of innovation in India, its successes and challenges, and its implications for world affairs.

The keynote speakers ranged from distinguished industrialists to academicians: Chanda Kochhar, Managing Director & CEO, ICICI Bank, Sam Pitroda, Adviser to the Prime Minister of India, Kanwal Rekhi, Managing Director, Inventus Capital Partners, and Arvind Subramanian, Senior Fellow, Peterson Institute for International Economics.

Professor Chatterjee spoke on 'The Legal and Regulatory Framework Promoting and Limiting Innovation: Pharmaceutical & Healthcare IP Innovation'. "I think it was an important dialogue that will drive the innovation-policy debate going forward in the country. It was a rare honor to be the only invited panelist from the IITs, the IIMs and the IISc," he said after the conference.

About Professor Chirantan Chatterjee

Dr. Chirantan Chatterjee is an Assistant Professor in Corporate Strategy & Policy (CSP) at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) with research interests in empirical industrial organization & global healthcare markets. At IIMB he is a Young Faculty Research Chair. His dissertation work on the global pharmaceutical industry has been supported by the National Science Foundation. He has consulted for the World Bank & Competition Commission of India, having also published for NBER and Brookings Press. Professor Chatterjee's interests in the economics of innovation and technology strategy are refined with a sectoral interest on the global evolution of the life-science industry. He explores issues around the supply and demand side pertaining to emerging questions around incentives for innovation, the role of intellectual property, entrepreneurship, and the interplay between regulation, innovation and long run societal welfare.

He holds a Ph.D. & an M.Phil in public policy and management from Carnegie Mellon University after his engineering and management degrees from the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, and Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta. Before his PhD, Chatterjee was a business journalist with Economic Times.
