Rooftop Solar Power Plant inaugurated at IIM Bangalore

Supported by NeSL, the initiative will meet about 15% of the institute's power needs

19 April, 2024, Bengaluru: A rooftop solar power plant, an initiative which is supported by National E-Governance Services Ltd (NeSL), was inaugurated on the IIM Bangalore campus, this evening.

Prof. Sourav Mukherji, Dean, Alumni Relations & Development, IIMB, said the institute, which has a Sustainability Task Force and follows many green practices, aspires to meet most of its power requirement through solar power in the future. “Our collaboration with NeSL will help us spread the message of sustainable living, utilize renewable energy resources and progress in our mission of creating substantial social impact.”

Prof. Haritha Saranga, Chairperson, Sustainability Taskforce, IIMB, highlighted that at a time of climate-related extreme events across the globe, IIMB has been pioneering many sustainability-related activities. “Together with NeSL, we will contribute to widespread sustainable practices on our campus and beyond.”

Ashok Chandra, Executive Director, Canara Bank, and alumnus of IIMB, described the Institute as “an environmentally sound campus”, and remarked that IIMB and NeSL have come together for the right cause. “To tackle and mitigate climate-related challenges is the way forward. All the buildings of Canara Bank use solar energy. Our CSR policies are also aligned to such sustainable practices,” he added.

Debajyoti Ray Chaudhuri, MD and CEO, NeSL, shared that working with IIMB on several projects has always achieved positive results. “We are happy to promote projects on sustainability.”

G Siva Koti Reddy, Manager, Security & Transport, introduced the guests and moderated the event. Utanka Sarma, Head – Alumni Relations, IIMB, delivered the vote of thanks.

Prof. M Jayadev, Dean Administration, IIMB, students, faculty and staff were present at the inauguration.

In 2016, a rooftop survey was conducted at IIMB to identify the potential for installation of rooftop solar power plant. The total potential identified was for 350 kWp, out of which a 290 kWp plant was installed in November 2017, with an average monthly generation of 40,000 units. The balance capacity of 60 kWp was installed in Phase 2 of the project. The average monthly generation is expected to increase by 7,000 to 8000 units. Around 15 percent of IIMB’s total power requirement will now be met.

Along with fostering excellence in management, innovation and entrepreneurship for business, government and society, IIMB’s vision also includes keeping a strong focus on environmental awareness, positive impact and sustainable living. The campus is an oasis of green. Some of the other measures adopted include setting up EV charging stations, installing rooftop solar panels, practising rainwater harvesting, recharging wells, LED lighting on campus, recycling, waste composting, and many more.
