CTL Facilitates ‘Teaching with Cases’ Seminar for Harvard Business School
The Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) at IIM Bangalore hosted the Teaching with Cases seminar delivered by Harvard Business School (HBS) from April 28 to 29, 2025. The programme saw the participation of 49 faculty members from various management schools across India, including NMIMS, XLRI Jamshedpur, IIM Udaipur, IIM Kozhikode, GITAM School of Business, Woxsen University, BML Munjal University, GIBS Business School, IMI New Delhi, Mahindra University, Goa Institute of Management, REVA University, Siva Sivani Institute of Management, Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, IFMR Graduate School of Business - Krea University, RV University, Bennett University, Management Development Institute Gurgaon, Plaksha University, Institute of Product Leadership, and Ratan Tata Maharashtra State Skills University.
Prof. U Dinesh Kumar, Dean (Faculty), IIM Bangalore, inaugurated the seminar with a Welcome Address for the participating faculty members.
Facilitated by Prof. V G Narayanan, Senior Associate Dean, HBS Online, the seminar was designed to help instructors acquire skills to effectively use cases for teaching and lead case discussions. On day 1 of the seminar, the participants were exposed to learning techniques for orchestrating classroom discussion, board management, preparing classroom discussions, and other key elements. On day 2, the participants got the opportunity to formulate cases for teaching as well as use them to discuss diverse business dilemmas.
Some of the broader topics covered during the seminar are listed below:
- Establishing and reshaping the learning contract with your students
- Fostering norms to enhance class discussion
- Questioning, listening, and responding
- Designing discussion plans
- Practicing the skill of case teaching
- Student engagement with case material and class discussion
One of the highlights of the seminar was the potential of generative AI to enhance case-based classroom discussions. The seminar concluded with a feedback session and interaction with the participating faculty, where they reflected on the learning and the overall insights gained.
